SMYRNA — A former Pace Academy teacher arrested Monday on federal child-pornography charges has been identified as 30-year-old William Joseph “Joey” Villemez of Smyrna.

He is scheduled for a detention hearing at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow in Atlanta before Federal Magistrate Judge Linda Walker.

Villamez is being represented by Judy Fleming.

According to a 10-page criminal complaint filed Monday in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Villemez used Pace Academy’s Internet service to order some of the videos.

Between July 2008 and March 2011, Villemez ordered 32 DVDs totaling $750 in 11 purchases through one website that authorities have investigated. Investigators reviewed one of the movies and two of the DVDs of digital downloads purchased by Villemez.

“All of these materials focus on boys who appear to be between 8 and 14 years old,” the complaint states. “although there is no sex in the movies or images, the focus … is naked young boys either alone or interacting with other naked young boys.”

Subpoena information from Charter and Comcast communications confirmed the DVDs were ordered using internet assigned to either Villemez’ address in Smyrna or the Internet assigned to Pace Academy in Atlanta, according to the complaint.

“No DVDs went to Pace Academy, but Internet assigned to Pace was used to order some DVDs that went to Villemez’ residence,” according to the complaint.

Until Monday, Villemez taught fine arts to middle and upper school students at the Buckhead private school, where tuition ranges from $19,600 to $22,570 per year.

Pace’s Head of School, Fred Assaf, told parents in a letter sent home on Monday that Villemez was no longer employed there.

“I want to stress to you that, according to federal investigators, Mr. Villemez has not involved any current or former Pace students in this situation, and there is no evidence of inappropriate physical contact between Mr. Villemez and Pace students or other children,” Assaf wrote. “Mr. Villemez has no record of previous criminal activity.”

Investigators executed a federal search warrant on Villemez’s condominium on Vinings Central Drive, in Smyrna, early Monday.

“Upon questioning, William Villemez admitted to placing the orders and viewing the videos for his own sexual stimulation and gratification, knowing that the images contained child pornography,” according to the criminal complaint.

Agents also found additional images of child porn on his computer that Villemez admitted viewing, downloading and saving on his computer, according to the complaint.

In October 2010, U.S. postal inspectors began investigating a website run from Canada that was shipping DVDs and images through the mail to U.S. customers. The website had more than 600 movies for sale, including 160 that contained child pornography, and the owner and operator of the site was charged with possessing and producing child pornography in that country.

The customer database was seized, and investigators tracked some of the orders to Villemez, according to the filing. The videos may have been shipped from a facility in North Tonawanda, N.Y.
