CANTON — A Woodstock man was arrested Tuesday and charged with molesting a 13-year-old he met at the church they both attended, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

Shogut Hussien, 64, is charged with one count of child molestation and two counts of sexual battery in an incident that took place at the man’s home, according to a release from Lt. Jay Baker, spokesperson for the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect provided transportation for the victim to youth activities at Woodstock First Baptist and volunteered to help with work around the victim’s family home, according to the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office.

“We understand he had permission from the mother to transport her back and forth to a basketball league at the church,” said Lt. Col. Ron Hunton.

The suspect was not acting as an authorized agent of the church or as an authorized volunteer at any time he had contact with the young teen, Hunton said.

“There is no current indication that a crime occurred on church property,” the release stated.

The weeklong investigation leading up to the arrest began following a complaint made to the Sheriff’s Office by the mother of the child, Hunton said.

Hussien has no arrests for similar offenses, Hunton said.

However, investigators have not ruled out the possibility of other potential victims.
