AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — A South Carolina man accused of fatally shooting a family member in an Augusta hospital room told a judge he thought he could get out of jail on bond to help his wife return home from the hospital.
The Augusta Chronicle reports that 85-year-old Charles William Gorrell told the judge that his wife is scheduled to be released from the hospital Friday after being treated for pneumonia.
Magistrate Judge Stephen Shepherd told Gorrell he didn’t have the authority to grant bond, and he would have to remain in the Richmond County Jail until a Superior Court judge could act.
Authorities say 59-year-old Tim Grooms was killed in a patient’s room in the hospital on Tuesday. Richmond County sheriff’s Capt. Scott Peebles says Grooms is the nephew of Gorrell’s wife.
