The project, which is expected to be complete in Jan. 2015, begins at the intersection of Shiloh Road and Wade Green Road. Shiloh changes names to Shallowford and then to Jamerson Road as it heads east. The 4.5 mile project ends 1,000 feet west of the Canton Road intersection.
Commissioners awarded the contract to C. W. Matthews Contracting Company in a unanimous vote.
Bryan Ricks, a county engineer and project manager, said traffic reports show rear end accidents have been a problem along the two lane stretch of road.
“There’s driveways right off of Shiloh but you also have a lot of subdivisions, and those people that stop to turn into a subdivision to make a left turn …. they wait and wait, and some people obviously ram into the back of the cars,” he said.
The project will also install a sidewalk along the southern part of the road, he said.
In other business, commissioners signed off on the location and construction of a building to house U.S. Customs and Border Protection at Cobb County McCollum Field. Atlanta Executive Jet Center, one of the fixed-base operators at McCollum, will build the 2,000-square-foot customs building, which will be located on the south apron, at an estimated cost of $450,000. It has also agreed to reimburse the county for all expenses related to the customs service for up to 10 years. The service is expected to be operational next spring.
Commissioners unanimously appointed a number of residents to various county boards, including:
*Vicki Plunkett to the Neighborhood Safety Commission Board for a term that expires Sept. 30, 2015. The 15-member board promotes safer neighborhoods for residential and business communities while increasing community involvement. Plunkett was nominated by Northeast Cobb Commissioner JoAnn Birrell.
*Carter Chapman to the Airport Advisory Board at the nomination of both Birrell and Northwest Cobb Commissioner Helen Goreham for a term that will expire in October 2014. The nine seat Airport Advisory Board advises commissioners through the airport manager on matters related to the vision, master planning and capital improvement program of the airport.
*John Brown, who was nominated by Goreham, to the Neighborhood Safety Commission for a term that expires Sept. 30, 2015.
*Mary Finlayson, who was nominated by county chairman Tim Lee, to fill a seat on the Department of Family and Children Services left vacant by Libby Pitner. The term expires in June 2015.
*Dayton Hibbs, who was nominated by Lee, to the Department of Family and Children Services Board, a term that expires June 2017.
*Karen Hallacy, who was nominated by Lee, to the Neighborhood Safety Commission for a term that expire Sept. 30 2015.

As with many traffic improvements, this one appears to be money motivated. If the county cared about safety instead of the police writing tickets for more minor accidents, then they would change the traffic lights at the Bells Ferry Rd/Shiloh Rd/ Shallowford Rd. intersection.
$11 MILLION and you still gotta buy your own dang car and then fuel that car yourself to get any value from this absurd expenditure of our tax dollars.
Who says public transit is too expensive? At least public transit actually does something, unlike a road, and on public transit you are not required to pay for hauling your own 2 tons of metal everywhere you go.
