MARIETTA — Marietta Police Department detectives are investigating a home invasion that happened early Sunday morning.

Sometime between 4 and 6 a.m. Sunday, an unknown man forced entry into a house on Hazel Street, near Maxwell Avenue, west of the Marietta Square, and assaulted an elderly woman who owns the home, police said.

“The victim was actually physically subdued and restrained,” said Officer David Baldwin.

The suspect took an unknown amount of cash and jewelry from the residence after threatening to physically harm the homeowner if she didn’t cooperate, police said. The homeowner was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where she was treated and released.

“Her injuries were very, very minor,” Baldwin said.

Police have no information on the suspect, though they were continuing to interview the victim. Baldwin didn’t know of any similar cases like this recently in Marietta.

Jaillene Hunter, a neighbor of the victim, said the homeowner is beloved by the entire neighborhood.

“She’s one of the kindest, classiest women we know,” Hunter said. “She was really so kind to us when we moved in. I know that a lot of people are going to be looking out for that woman.”

Hunter praised the work performed by police, who spent much of Sunday at the crime scene.

An incident like this is unusual for the neighborhood, Hunter said.

“Overall, our neighborhood is very kind,” she said.

Baldwin agreed.

“It’s actually a very quiet, safe neighborhood,” he said. “Something like this is extremely uncommon.”
