MARIETTA — Marietta Police Department detectives are investigating a home invasion that happened early Sunday morning.

Sometime between 4 and 6 a.m. Sunday, an unknown man forced entry into a house on Hazel Street, near Maxwell Avenue, west of the Marietta Square, and assaulted an elderly woman who owns the home, police said.

“The victim was actually physically subdued and restrained,” said Officer David Baldwin.

The suspect took an unknown amount of cash and jewelry from the residence after threatening to physically harm the homeowner if she didn’t cooperate, police said. The homeowner was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where she was treated and released.

“Her injuries were very, very minor,” Baldwin said.

Police have no information on the suspect, though they were continuing to interview the victim. Baldwin didn’t know of any similar cases like this recently in Marietta.

Police said the case remains under active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call (770) 794-5380.

Jaillene Hunter, a neighbor of the victim, said the homeowner is beloved by the entire neighborhood.

“She’s one of the kindest, classiest women we know,” Hunter said. “She was really so kind to us when we moved in. I know that a lot of people are going to be looking out for that woman.”

Hunter praised the work performed by police, who spent much of Sunday at the crime scene.

An incident like this is unusual for the neighborhood, Hunter said.

“Overall, our neighborhood is very kind,” she said.

Baldwin agreed.

“It’s actually a very quiet, safe neighborhood,” he said. “Something like this is extremely uncommon.”

The more we "revitalize" Powder Springs St and Delk and Franklin, the more the displaced will start showing up elsewhere, such as on Hazel Street. Why can't we just keep the Franklin Rd types over on Franklin Rd????

What is a Franklin Road type? I have a freind who owns a condo and operates her business from her home office.

She drives a late model SUV and works closely with an extremely well known Movie Producer based in Atlanta. We went on vacation over the summer and two days after returning she went on another trip with other friends.

I'm not sure of this "Franklin Road Type" which you speak of.

Now "IDIOT's"...... I'm becoming quite familiar with that type :-)

For those of us in the nearby area, it would be helpful to have more details. A description of the person who broke in would help. Its frightening enough to read something like this and vague details don't help. Between 4-6 a.m. What a nightmare.

I just got off the phone with police and they are working on a description of the suspect to release to the public. Stay tuned!
