KENNESAW — A driver who died after a fiery crash down a ravine from the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 on Monday afternoon has been identified as Kevin M. Stefanik, 39, of Woodstock.
Authorities believe Stefanik died as a result of injuries he sustained in the crash, which occurred shortly after 4 p.m. Monday just below the Barrett Parkway overpass in Kennesaw.
Witnesses told investigators that the driver of a 2011 Buick Regal had stopped on the right shoulder just past the exit ramp to Barrett Parkway.
A H.E.R.O. unit operator was about to pull over and offer aid when the Buick driver began driving northbound on the interstate. But just about 100 yards north, the buick then left the east side of the Interstate and went down the ravine and into the woodline, where the Buick burst into flames.
Cobb Fire crews then found a burned body in the driver’s seat.
Cobb Police investigators are still trying to determine what exactly caused Stefanik to stop in the first place, and then plunge over the side. They can be reached at 770-499-3987.
