MARIETTA — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting death of Jerome George Cundy of Woodstock, who was killed by police on Interstate 75 in Cobb on Sunday after a chase that apparently began in Cherokee County.

GBI spokesperson John Bankhead declined to answer any questions about the incident, including who shot Cundy, how many shots were fired and how many agencies were involved in the pursuit.

“It’s an ongoing investigation,” Bankhead said. “As with all police-involved shootings the GBI investigates, the results will be turned over to the District Attorney.”

According to a release from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Cundy, 53, is accused of robbing a Walgreens on the corner of Bells Ferry and Hawkins Store roads in Cobb County just after 8 a.m. Sunday, and less than two hours later, robbing a Marathon gas station on Bells Ferry and Victoria roads in Woodstock, where the victim told police Cundy took around $500 in cash.

An alert was broadcast to area law enforcement using footage from a surveillance video at the Woodstock gas station, and Woodstock Police spotted Cundy’s vehicle, described as a green passenger car. They say a chase ensued when he refused to stop for authorities near Bells Ferry Road and Interstate 575, with Cundy leading police southbound on I-75 for about seven minutes.

Cundy was finally stopped in the southbound lanes of I-75 at the South Marietta Parkway in Marietta, authorities said, but Cundy then reportedly pointed a gun at officers, at which time he was shot.

The interstate was closed for nearly six hours while investigators reconstructed the scene, causing major backups on the highway and other roads. The GBI released Cundy’s name Monday.

Cobb Police and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office are still investigating the robberies.
