Instead of a sea of white faces, we saw America as it really is. Belligerence and bitterness were replaced by excitement and anticipation. Democrats talked about visions and values while Republicans rallied around distortions and deception.
The GOP flogged fear and loathing. Democrats promoted understanding and cooperation.
About the only thing Republicans got right at their convention was Americans have a clear choice.
Hijacked by far-right radicals funded by faceless billionaires, Republicans today see a nation that looks like one in the third world, with wealthy oligarchs pulling the political strings, a small and perpetually struggling middle class and tens of millions of poor and desperate citizens left to their own devices.
Democrats envision a nation of opportunity for all where the rules are the same for everyone regardless of the size of one’s Swiss bank account.
Right from the beginning Democrats embraced the Hispanic and Latino voters alienated by anti-immigration polemicists. We met Julian Castro, the dynamic young mayor of San Antonio who told of his family’s fierce determination to make it in their adopted country.
“My mother fought hard for civil rights so that instead of a mop, I could hold this microphone, Castro declared.
Republicans tell us they’re all about freedom and individual rights — except when it comes to women and their reproductive health. Then Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan think government regulation and intrusion is fine.
Sandra Fluke, the law student who was viciously attacked by Rush Limbaugh because she spoke out about access to contraception, warned women, “In six months we’ll have a president who has our back or turns his back.”
In his acceptance speech last week, Romney mocked the president’s concerns about the environment but failed to mention American troops in harm’s way. In a time of war, it was a jaw-dropping omission that revealed much about the man auditioning for commander in chief.
Barack and Michelle Obama have been with the troops and their families from day one, never letting Americans forget their sacrifice.
Elaine Brye, an Ohio mother of four children on active duty in the military, introduced Michelle Obama, thanking the First Lady for her dedication and support.
Mrs. Obama then delivered an electrifying speech in which she invoked the humble roots of both she and her husband while reminding us that a strong and vibrant middle class is the key to economic recovery.
“Barack knows the American dream because he’s lived it,” declared the First Lady. “He believes that when you’ve worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity, you do not slam it shut behind you.”
Speaking of slamming doors, George W. Bush never made it in person to the GOP convention. The former president is personae non grata in the Republican Party these days, the damage done to many American families during his two terms too recent and too raw.
Bill Clinton not only showed up in Charlotte, he enthusiastically nominated President Obama for a second term.
Republicans desperately hope voters will forget Bush and his ruinous “trickle down” policies even as Romney plans more of the same if he’s elected.
Democrats want voters to remember the eight years of peace and prosperity we enjoyed during Clinton’s eight years in office.
“No president could have fully repaired the damage (Obama) found in four years,” Clinton told Americans before blasting Romney’s tax-cuts-for-the-rich economic plan. “We can’t give the reins of government to someone who will double down on trickle down.”

Under Obama we have hit the following Stats.
More people on food stamps than ever.
More people qualifying for disability than ever.
The work force is at a 30 year low. Not sure how our work force can go down as population goes up. If Obama had same work force numbers as when he took office then un-employment would be over 11%.
Our average income in US down by 10% since Obama took office.
Poverty rate has increased under Obama.
So please tell me why he deserves another 4 years
Oh and least we forget fore closures at an all time high under Obama.
The continuation of Newt Gingrich’s moniker for President Obama as the “food stamp president” among Republicans this election season is the product of selective memory and political expediency, writes Cato Institute’s Tad DeHaven.
Although the food stamp program hit an all-time high this summer of 46.7 million individuals in June, DeHaven says the trajectory can be traced back to the 2002 farm bill passed by a Republican-controlled House and signed by President George W. Bush.
According to DeHaven:
What Republicans don’t want to acknowledge is the role they played in expanding the food stamps program before President Obama ever took office. The 2002 farm bill—passed by a Republican-controlled House and signed by Republican President George W. Bush—expanded the food stamps program. As the Wall Street Journal’s editorial page correctly noted yesterday, “The food-stamp boom began with the George W. Bush Republicans, who expanded benefits in the appalling 2002 farm bill.”
See my Friday column on the unemployment "stats" you mention.
"...we can start rewarding companies that open new plants and train new workers and create new jobs here in the United States of America."
Really? Why not begin by paying back Boeing for all the legal fees incurred in their battles with the NLRB during the opening of the plant in South Carolina.
"...We've opened millions of new acres for oil and gas exploration in the last three years, and we'll open more..."
Really? You're speaking of private and state owned land, right? It is well known that permitting on federal land is stagnant.
"...a future where we keep investing in wind and solar..."
Really? One word - Solyndra.
"...my plan will continue to reduce the carbon pollution that is heating our planet, because climate change is not a hoax..."
Yes, it is a hoax. Look at the UN IPCC email scandal. Also, why didn't O attend the recent Rio 20 Environmental Summit?
"Help us work with colleges and universities to cut in half the growth of tuition costs over the next 10 years."
Now, I don't want to take anything out of context here. By "us" I think he means the federal government, right? Just how will this be accomplished? Why stop at half? Cut the growth down by a quarter!
"Around the world, we've strengthened old alliances..."
I guess he's speaking of his off-mic comment to Russian President Medvedev promising more "flexibility" after his election.
"...And the truth is, it will take more than a few years for us to solve challenges that have built up over decades..."
Really? I thought everything was hunky dory during the Clinton years, with the surplus and all. I'll remind readers that Clinton's success (budget surplus, welfare reform, cuts to capital gains taxes that resulted in revenue growth, only happened because the House and Senate were controlled by Republicans and they held his feet to the fire).
I dunno, that's probably enough for now.
All I see from the Foley guy is false generalities.
I'll help you: To Romney, our brave troops are like the workers he used and discarded at Bain. They're not worth mentioning because they're just "factors of production" to Romney, meaningless pawns to be thrown into a war with, say, Iran, because the defense industry supporting his campaign would love nothing better.
Your hatred of Obama blinds you to reality, buster.
I was talking to CobbCoGuy. Please do not interrupt with your slavering , bootlicking defense of the worst President since Carter.
CobbCo, I repeat, excellent post.
I have not seen any neglect of our service men and women by Romney. I guess I was too busy wondering why the DNC left God and Jerusalem out of their convention on that issue. Then I saw the mockery of Villaraigosa receiving a resounding chorus of "NO" from his anti- Jewish, anti-Christian delegates.
No matter how idiotic you have seemed to be in your trite chauvinistic column, I had , until now, thought you would not like what happened at the DNC convention.
So there you sit, an Occupy anything, Give wealth away, hate higher income people , Obamacare loving toady. Spouting party lines that reek of low thought and little understanding of what we need to do to try to get out of the economic bind we are in.
Foley, whatever you are, you are not an American capitalist.
The latest jobs report came out this morning, how are you and Obama going to spin those numbers?
Oh, Kevin. You are such a fool.
But I want to help you. The 4.5 million jobs added over the last 29 months is a fact you can easily research rather than claim it's a lie and look silly in public.
You obviously have a computer, so Google it and learn. You're welcome.
The DNC was inspiring and about the best that America can be. The RNC was a melancholy and sad hearkening to the good-old days before Americans knew that deregulation was about to take us off a cliff. "Take our Country back." Back to where? Back before those uppity negroes and women could vote? How about all the way back to our founding fathers who DID NOT equivocate when they stated again and again that our country was NOT beholden to any religion. Its damned mystifying when Repubs can't even heed Jesus' own words because they're too busy picking and choosing which parts of the Old Testament to enforce. Unless I'm mistaken all y'all eating bacon and shrimp are just as much of an abomination as homosexuals and I didn't notice any evangelicals lining up to stone Palin's kid for not marrying her baby daddy.
You perception of what occured at both the RNC and DNC is distorted by the 3D glasses you wear. Do you think Obama can relate to the Middle class? Do you think he has really "recovered 4.5 million jobs in the last 29 months"? It is obvious you have drank out of the fantasy punch bowl. The very fact that the BET network carried the final day of the DNC shows how "playing the race card" the Democrats are.
I still want to know who at the paper you are married to or related to.
