“He did make plays every time he touched the ball tonight,” said North Cobb coach Shane Queen. “I thought he scored on that one run.”
Queen was referring to a screen pass that Miller ran down the sidelines for a 40-yard gain. The senior who’s been offered a scholarship by Air Force thought he had broke one as well.
“I thought that I had scored on that one,” Miller said.
“When I don’t score, (I think) it’s a missed opportunity.”
Starr’s Mill (0-1) missed an opportunity early in the first quarter. Two holding penalties pushed the Warriors into a 2nd and 39 yards from their own 35-yard line.
But that didn’t faze quarterback Tyler Queen. The sophomore stepped back and calmly connected with Latrell Gibbs on a skinny post for a 32-yard gain, following that with a 10-yard pass to Xavier Borishade for an improbable first down.
“It’s bittersweet and nerve-racking,” the elder Queen said about watching his son, who finished 10-of-23 for 239 yards and six carries for 61 yards. “It’s fun on nights like (Friday) and things are going to be fun at the house.”
Taking it to the end zone seemed to be the theme with Borishade starting the scoring with a 58-yard touchdown on the game’s second play and adding a 71-yard score in the fourth.
But Miller’s 68-yard score was the one that silenced the crowd of about 8,000 at Panther Stadium.
He raced through the right side of the line with Queen before splitting away, slithering through arm tackles and sprinting down the middle of the field before leaping into the end zone.
“Every time I touch the ball,” Miller said. “I try to imagine myself in the end zone.”
Meanwhile the defense kept the Panthers out of the end zone for the first time since the 2010 state championship game, applying pressure on junior quarterback Kyle Moseley (9-of-21 for 85 yards). He was sacked four times, the last one jarring the ball loose and setting up a five-yard touchdown run by Cameron Albright.
