Sprayberry at Wheeler

MARIETTA — Wins don’t have to be pretty.

What mattered most to Wheeler on Friday was beating Sprayberry 10-7 at Corky Kell Stadium — the Wildcats’ first season-opening win since 2003.

Wheeler (1-0) won despite racking up 11 penalties for nearly 100 yards, including one that negated a 62-yard touchdown run by Kahlem Looney in the second quarter. The Wildcats also lost a fumble 1 yard away from the end zone on a botched snap, ending an 18-play drive that took up most of the second quarter.

However, the Wildcats capitalized on Sprayberry’s miscues in the fourth quarter, and their defense accounted for the game-winning touchdown with 6:01 left, when Allen Artis picked off a Shane Young pass and darted 25 yards into the end zone.

“In the second half, (Sprayberry) came out, and their defense had our number,” Wheeler coach Mike Collins said. “Fortunately, we were able to get our defense to make a play. It was a hard-fought game from both sides.”

It was the 44th meeting between the east Cobb schools, but the first since 2007. Wheeler leads the series 31-13.

Sprayberry (0-1) clamped down on Wheeler defensively after allowing 215 first-half yards. The Wildcats had great field position against the Yellow Jackets throughout the half, but penalties prevented them from scoring.

Looney rushed for more than 100 first-half yards and finished the game with 117. He opened with a 43-yard scamper that led to J.D. Barron’s 38-yard field goal and a 3-0 lead Wheeler carried into the second half.

After Sprayberry managed just 41 first-half yards, the Yellow Jackets started finding holes in the second half and scored the game’s only offensive touchdown late in the third quarter.

Rakeem Myricks, who finished with 52 rushing yards, had a 25-yard carry early in the drive. A 23-yard burst from Corey Cooper put the Yellow Jackets on Wheeler’s 4-yard line, and quarterback Torrey Richardson finished it off by running up the middle and diving for a 4-yard touchdown.

Although Sprayberry couldn’t get much going early in the fourth quarter, its defense had control of Wheeler — that is, before momentum turned on Artis’ interception return.

“I saw the play (develop) and tried to break on it,” Artis said. “My instincts took over, and I took (the ball).”

Elyjah Marrow’s interception for Wheeler on Sprayberry’s next drive was also key.

The Yellow Jackets had taken command of the drive, moving from their own 22 to the Wheeler 26 with help from a facemask penalty against the Wildcats. On first-and-15, Young attempted a long touchdown pass, but Marrow was there to pick it off.

With 4:16 left in the game, Wheeler’s offense chewed out the clock and got a crucial first down with when Sprayberry was flagged for a facemask penalty with 1:27 left.

“We have a lot of inexperience, but I’m proud of this team,” Sprayberry coach Billy Shackelford said. “What I’m disappointed in is that we can’t get through a week without having one unproductive practice. Could that have made a difference in a couple of plays? The answer is yes.”

just pray shack have a winning season... but i doubt it with that playbook and you know im speaking the truth. people lose jobs everyday when they dont perform and Shack is no exception. but in your world he's a coach great and thats fine. these kids deserve a chance to compete and he's not putting them in position to win. The head Coach is responsible for the team direction. when teams fall apart they get rid of the COACH not the team. And I protect and serve for the record and help teens daily so please save the excuses. just like your intitled to your opinon so am I. you guys never thought someone would challenge the Coach on his play calls but your wrong!!!!! the plays on offense has hurt this team since Shack been there physically and mentally. once again if Shack got paid to win he'd be living on the streets plus starving..... SHACK Playbook = 3-7 season and if he still have a JOB then the rules to the GAME are RiGGED good luck Playing Kennesaw Mountain although this game is not a brag about match up. but Shack will find a way to blow it!!!!! ITS good to ruffle feathers once in awhile and put pressure on under achievers....... get your postgame speach ready BILLY and please dont point fingers

Ok grammer lets agree on a couple things. one, our offensive plays are boring and they cause the team loses. two our head coach been calling the same plays 08,09,10,11 amen? advancing teams to the next level is what its all about and Shack has destroyed great teams with his play calls. our recievers are out there for nothing (no Touches) our fans are there to see our defense. Wheres the Offense? clearly your his Wife making those statements, protecting his job and I understand but he is not a leader on field, maybe at home but play calling is not his thing. We need to attract talent to Sprayberry and bring home a state banner and since Shack been there he had great teams and the chance to do it but he did not. he also had great fan support each year, or players need direction on offense and a winning spirit. No disrespect but Shack was never been able to move the ball at will with his play calls and the trend continues this year. GET IN THE GAME OR GET OUT COACH!!! im going by you record and stats so this isnt personal. you had two season where you were over 500 and those teams should have went deep in the playoffs amen?? guess what though? his play calling killed the thrill. Im sorry for being honest....

Jacket Fan, I suggest you spend less time on blogs and more time with a tutor. And for the record, what is it that you do for a living? Let us know where you work and the address so we can come and criticize and second guess every decision you make. Does your job involve making sure that all eleven 15, 16 and 17 year olds are doing the correct thing at the same time? I didn't think so.

This confirm the jacket fan statement, you cant produce a winning team because you dont have control of yourself or them, basically your saying you've lost the team right? maybe its time for change not sure. you havent taking ownership of your mistakes for fridays lost and that worries me as a parent. dont shift blame when its a coach and team effort Billy.....

Ive been saying for 3 years and I will say it again this year that Shack should be demoted as head coach or terminated. we attract no standout players to this school because we dont produce winning seasons. our games are close and great because the MONSTER DEFENSE. Shack play calls stinks up the place. if shack had to win games to eat guess what????? he would starve. then to make matters worse he blamed the team and used the inexprienced card WOW!!!! its called getting players ready and giving them a chance to play. a person that never played football can be called that but someone thats been exposed cant. i bet you didnt turn down those players money that cant play??? Whats keeping Shack job is beyond football and life is about knowing the right people. dont get me wrong he's a good natured person but not a strong coach for sprayberry. again Parents voice your opinon. if a teacher cant teach is it fair they keep thier job because they show up on time? or because they talk good? WINNING IS EVERYTHING because it promote a future for the school and also generate revenu and ultimately attract players in the area. we've lose alot of players and fans because we cant win. that lost was heart breaking. the head coach is responsible for the play calling and players are responsible for the execution of the play but the coach put players in position to shine or fail, THAT PICK 6 was your fault COACH SHACK!!!!!! he threw across his body under pressure plus you couldnt gey first downs when it mattered...Hats off to the DEFENSE and the D.coaches yall kept it close and didnt give up a touch down..... we lose next week he gotta go!!!!! this trend cant continue you Agree?

Based on your grammar and spelling errors, I doubt you completed high school. Shack has produced a lot more victories than the coaches before him.

Geez, West Cobb Resident...I was thinking the same thing. Do any of these Sprayberry posters have a high school diploma? How embarrassing for them. If they could actually spell or use proper grammar, someone like me might actually pay attention to them. But all I'm hearing is a bunch of blabbing by an uneducated fool. People like this crack me up because they think they know, but they really don't know. I can't imagine how miserable the coaches are at Sprayberry who have to deal with the 'experts' like these fools.
