New solution offered for funding schools

DEAR EDITOR:

With all of the articles about school funding this month I was surprised that nobody mentioned this solution.

I for one will be looking at my tax assessment from 2010 and whatever I am “saving” from the state willingly dropping property taxes I am going to donate directly to my child’s school, Murdock Elementary. If everyone did this it would be far cheaper than paying for private school, your specific school(s) would reap the rewards, it would be tax free as a donation, and our home values would benefit from maintaining the excellence of our schools.

I am considering trying to get a signed petition from people pledging to do this for our community.

We can’t stop the government from using excess SPLOST funds to lower our property taxes, we can’t stop the decline of our housing market, but we can refuse to let these things destroy our children’s education!

That doesn't even make sense! People select private schools as a much better alternative to public schools. They have discipline, better education, patriotism, religion, morals, and other critical criteria that are either absent or minimized in government schools. So dropping private schools and contributing (more) money to the public schools is going to solve the problem? I don't think so! The solution is to grant every family vouchers for school age children that can be used by the parents in either public or private schools, whichever they want. Watch the flight to the private schools.
