CANTON — After almost four hours of searching, the Canton Police Department found no explosive devices at Carmike Cinemas Riverstone 15 on Reinhardt College Parkway after reports of a bomb threat Friday.

After receiving a call from the corporate office in Columbus regarding a bomb threat at multiple theater locations, Chief Robert Merchant said a manager at the Canton movie theater called police around 10:30 a.m.

“(The manager) decided for precautionary reasons to go ahead and evacuate the theater,” Merchant said.

Police arrived on the scene around 10:40 a.m. and could be seen removing the yellow caution tape around the area at approximately 2 p.m.

“No suspicious devices were found,” Merchant said.

Earlier in the day, Lt. German Rivas with the Canton Police Department said there was no direct bomb threat to Canton’s theater, but the caller told employees at the Columbus office he placed nine to 10 explosives in Carmike theaters throughout the state that would go off sometime Friday.

According to Fox 5 Atlanta, police in multiple jurisdictions searched several Carmike Cinemas theaters across metro Atlanta and north Georgia on Friday.

Fox 5 reported that Paulding County Sheriff’s Office officials said all Carmike Cinemas were under precautionary measures.

Atlanta police told Fox 5 a caller phoned in a threat to Carmike Cinema’s corporate office in Columbus with an unspecified threat. Police told Fox they believe the caller is a former employee.

At the Canton location, Merchant said nothing was discovered after the investigation concluded at approximately 2:20 p.m. Friday.

Merchant said a Woodstock Police Department K-9 Unit and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation.
