MARIETTA — Incumbent Tim Lee, who is being challenged by Bill Byrne in the Aug. 21 runoff to continue serving as county chairman, was happy to talk about his successes as chairman with the Cobb Young Republicans, but dismissed any talk about decisions he would have made differently as “irrelevant.”

Lee spoke before an applauding, friendly crowd of about two dozen at Johnnie MacCracken’s Celtic Pub off the Marietta Square during the Young Republicans’ monthly meeting on Tuesday night.

Katelyn Ledford of Marietta, who is in her second one-year term as chair of the Young Republicans, said she contacted all Republican candidates in the runoff to speak at her meeting, including Byrne, although Byrne told the Journal in a phone call Tuesday evening that he knew nothing about the event.

“I sent him an email. It might have been this morning, and we had put it on Facebook,” Ledford said.

The evening also saw Rebecca Keaton, a candidate for Cobb Superior Court clerk, speak to the group. Like Byrne, Keaton’s runoff opponent, John Skelton, was also missing.

One questioner from the audience, which had the crowd roaring with laughter, asked Lee if he ever plans on running for commissioner in a different county “and bashing Cobb for being a prosperous county,” a reference to an attack mailer Lee’s campaign sent out about Byrne living in Polk County.

Lee said he did not intend to move.

“In fact, I get jittery when I drive out of Cobb County just to have dinner,” Lee said.

Another questioner asked Lee about the passion he has for his position.

“It’s tough to be a citizen servant. Where does that passion come from,” the questioner asked.

Lee said the decisions he made as chairman are why three people chose to run against him.

“If I had taken the easy way out and thrown Cobb County’s well being, from my perspective, into an area of potential risk for its sovereignty financially, I’d be like all the other candidates that didn’t have an opponent,” Lee said. “What I did was not for my reelection. What I did was for the best interest of Cobb County and its citizens, and if they see through the rhetoric hopefully they’ll return me back for another four years with that same passion to do what is best in response to the citizens’ needs and wants and desires to lead us into an area that I think we need to go.”

Lee went on to say that, “Passion comes from the heart. It comes from the gut. And with me it comes from fulfilling what I believe is God’s will for my life.”

The Journal asked Lee to name his proudest achievement as chairman as well as what decision he most regrets making.

Lee spoke of visiting the rating agencies in New York last year, where they told him if he didn’t make a course correction he was putting the county at financial risk of losing Cobb’s Triple-AAA rating. They also warned him about the excesses of the county’s pension plan.

“’We realize it’s a tough economic time,’” Lee said the rating agencies told him. “’We realize you’re in a conservative community. We realize that most people don’t like what you have to do, but if you don’t, don’t come back here next year expecting (to have the same rating).’ And I promised them I would make the decisions that needed to be done to ensure that we were taking care of Cobb County citizens’ financial books and move forward, and we did that – criticized — we did that, got me three opponents, but we did it, my most crowning, proud moment was being able to go back this past June to all three of those rating agencies and look them in the eye and say, ‘I promised you that I would do what I needed to do to make sure Cobb County was in a position to be financially stable and I did.’”

Lee declined to cite a specific example of a decision he made that he most regrets making as chairman.

“I’m a human being,” Lee said. “I’ve made mistakes, and I will continue to make mistakes as long as I’m here on Earth. I try my best to always do the right thing by the citizens of Cobb County, by the employees that work to provide services, and by my family and my country and my God. I fail occasionally, and I regret every time that I fail. But I learn and I try to analyze and pick myself up, and I try to move forward in a better, better way, and so I don’t have one single regret. I don’t have one problem or issue that I think I could have done differently, because anybody can Monday Morning quarterback. God knows you do it. I try my best to do the best that I can. If it’s not right 100 percent you learn so that you can do better next time. If it’s 50 percent we really look at it hard and make sure we go forward. I don’t have an instance. That’s not an unfair question, that’s a reasonable question, it’s just an irrelevant question.”

Tuesday morning Jim Galloway in his Political Insider column took note of how Lee had rejected an invitation from Jill Flamm, president of the East Cobb Civic Association, to participate in a chairman candidate forum her group was hosting, as well as declining to participate in a MDJ-sponsored debate with Byrne which would have been carried live by TV 23.

Galloway went on to report that the Atlanta Press Club was considering hosting such a debate as well to be aired by WPBA (Channel 30) over the weekend before the runoff vote on Aug. 21.

Asked about this prior to his talk with the Young Republicans, Lee said he would decline an invitation from the Atlanta Press Club as well.

“I’m in marketing,” Lee said. “Television is used for broad reach. We are in a specific target mode right now to get specific people back and TV is not the most effective, efficient way to reach those targeted people.”

Such things as direct mail pieces, telephone calls, and door to door conservations are what works, he said.

Lee has hired two consulting firms to advise him in his race, Joel McElhannon with Athens-based South Public Affairs Consulting, who helped him in his first campaign, and Jeremy Brand with Brand LLC.

Lee said he wasn’t worried about the message it might send that he was refusing to debate Byrne.

“I’ve had a lot of people say [claps reporter on the back] you’re doing the right thing by not doing the debate,” Lee said.

“I’ve had a lot of people say [claps reporter on the back] you’re doing the right thing by not doing the debate,” Lee said.

Of course they are saying that because they know that he will get his lunch handed to him in a debate.

Just look at his recent history of bumbling, ill advised comments on almost any issue and you will see why his handlers are keeping him gagged.

Based on the recent posts in this forum it looks like Lee and his cronies at the Chamber have mobilized their obediant minions (i.e. Young Republicans, chamber staff, county employees) and are trying to neutralize the voices of the people who know what a dismal failure Lee has been.

I am hoping, that just like the TSPLOST strategy that promulgated lies and bashed opponents, this disingenuous campaign will also go down in flames.

Not suprisingly, Lee is once again taking a page from the Obama's dirty campaign playbook and trying to discredit Byrne because he cannot run on his own poor record of governance.

Next thing you know the Lee camp will seize on the Bedminster issue and Byrne will be blamed for causing some kind of terrible illness.

Come to think of it, if you look at all of the brain dead bureaucrats along County Services Parkway that might actually be true.

Luckily many recent [last 10 years]county employees live out of the county and cannot vote for either one.

Having spoke to a few dozen recently they are fearful they will all have to reapply unless they are only a few years from retirement.

I am not sure what kind of a turnout we will be having since the same old established people win out the fresh new faces. It is sad to say that the people of Cobb county don't get the facts before they vote, they deserve what they get on August 21.

Can someone tell me when an incumbent chairman debated a challenger?

@BigPapi

So that is justification for preventing Cobb County voters from being allowed to hear the candidates articulate their positions and ideas in a debate?

Come on!!!

Why don't the Lee bashers take a few minutes to go meet Tim Lee and say these things face to face? Mr. Lee became chairman at the toughest time since the Great Depression. He made difficult decisions, and he stands by those decisions. At the same time, he is a real person. He is a leader who genuinely cares about Cobb County. I saw Mr. Lee the other day at a coffee shop near the Marietta Square. It was nice to have an elected official take the time to listen to me.....just a dumb construction worker from Mableton.

Now you are using the lame Obama excuses (i.e. the toughest time since the Great Depression) to defend Tim Lee and his horrific performance?

Given his Obama like tax and spend policies that is probably fitting.

So how many muffins did Tim Lee order with his double latte?

4 ? 6? 10?
Irrelevant Question
|
August 08, 2012
"it’s just an irrelevant question" does not say Regrets are irrelevant. WE are more interested in looking forward. (of course, of you look back at Byrn'es mistakes you will be terrified of future if he's in charge.) But, many errors made by MDJ in most articles. Headlines are usually misleading, a la Tabloid Sensationalism. Also, is wanting someone "bashed in person" not a threat of a "personal attack"? Oh well, most of these things are indeed personal attacks but Friendly Editor evidentlydoesn't recognize that.

Incumbent Tim Lee, is challenging Bill Byrne in the Aug. 21 runoff?

Wow. Editorialize much?

Normally the Incumbent is challenged.

Your slip is showing, MDJ. Again.

That is especially true in Tim Lee's case!!

He is challenged in so many ways.

Intellectually

Verbally

Integrity

Judgement

Leadership

Stewardship

Horrible election

August 08, 2012
The upcoming election of a two used candidates for Cobb County Chairman is a disaster. What did you people look at, research and check on, before you voted? Whatever the result is, you deserve it - I don't. Considering moving to an estate in Rockmart - less than 40,000 people living there.

Cobb needs to move forward, not backward. Twenty years ago, Bill Byrne thrust Cobb County into the International spotlight as a hate mongering part of backwoods Georgia. 'Cobb County- where Hate is a Family Value' Has he changed? NO. “If you think you’re going to get a new warm and fuzzy Bill Byrne, you are sadly mistaken,” he declared. “If I hurt somebody’s feelings, I really just don’t care.”

It was easy for Byrne for guide the county thru good economic times. He would not fare so well in troubled economics times, especially when he seems to go out of his way to alienate those that could help Cobb County. Cobb cannot stand on its own. It needs new business, new people, and new ideas if it is to survive. Cobb is no longer the white flight, country club HOA community that it was at one time.

It is time for you cowards that will not post under your real name to realize that.

Tim Lee is not perfect- but he is a better choice than Byrne.

August 08, 2012
Is this another Facebook or E-mail type of psuedo invitation to a debate?

Just call the guy and invite him to come instead of posting something that he may of may not read.

Does Tim Lee know you have made this invitation or did you just unilaterally decid eto make it?

You better make sure, because if he thinks Byrne will be there he probably won't show up.

These Tim Lee speaking engagements with no opposition present to counter his dubious claims and statements curiously reminicent of the way the TSPLOST proponents tried to promote their one sided opinions without providing a chance for the TSPLOST opponents to state their case.

--RE: I sent him an email. It might have been this morning, and we had put it on Facebook,--

Sounds like the Young Republicans are really not that interested in giving a forum to anyone who is not supported by the chamber/rino establishment.

I don't care what anyone's opinions are of any of the candidates, but going online and bashing individuals and organizations, while hiding behind a handle that gives no indication of who you are is weak.

At least the individuals mentioned in this article were willing to speak to Mr. Gillooly, and have their actual names used.

It is no secret that the Cobb Young Republicans meet the first Tuesday of every month at Johnny MacCrackin's. The guest speakers always have time for Q&A, and sometimes the press shows up to ask their own questions.

Stop hiding as online trolls, and join the real debate.

Yes, Joe, but...

Mr. Williams, your childish reply is uncalled for. I would imagine that the "true" Republican, Ms. Keaton probably had something to do with Skelton not being invited. If she is nasty enough to steal websites, then you know she's going to do anything else possible to get an

"edge", especially when her opponent refuses to play dirty politics. Vote Skelton! If you don't, our county will deeply regret the consequences. Keaton is NOT qualified or capable of being our Clerk.

Since when is posting something on Facebook inviting Bill Byrne? Tim Lee would not have shown up if Bill Byrne had been invited because he would have attended - Tim has now declined 3 debates - why is he so afraid to let people see who he is? Stop listening to your consultants Tim - dedate Bill and let the people decide. YR's remember, this is the Tim Lee that does not have the word Republican on any signs or ads? This was a consultant setup meeting that the YR's fell for....Ms. Ledford, learn how to lead a group, not be a pawn.

Katelyn Ledford is nobody's pawn. She's a good leader. She has been the Chair of the Cobb Young Republican for two years. The Obama Economy stinks. But, even in tough economy/financial times, she and her Board have been able to raise money. Money that will be spent to help Republicans WIN in the general election on Tuesday, November 6, 2012.

The next Cobb Young Republican Meeting is on Tuesday, September 4, 2012, on the non-smoking side of Johnnie MacCracken's. Katelyn Ledford knows how to lead. If you like, you are welcome to come to the next Cobb Young Republican and find out for yourself.
