ESPNU is giving Walton football nationwide exposure after its first trip to the state finals last season.

The Raiders will be nationally televised on Oct. 26 when they host Milton. Kickoff is scheduled for 9 p.m.

It was the Milton game that suited both interests of the team and the network. Now Region 5AAAAAA rivals, the two teams met in the first round of the Class AAAAA state tournament last season when they played in different regions with Walton winning 48-14. Milton is expected to be a playoff contender in 2012.

It’s the first time since the school opened 37 years ago that Walton football is being televised nationally. The game was pushed back to 9 p.m. from its standard 7:30 start to suit the needs of markets on the west coast.

“They wanted to profile us and find a good game that we play, and (Milton) worked out best for them and for us, and the rest is history,” Walton athletics director Christian Suttle said. “It was crazy.”

Walton’s Oct. 5 matchup with reigning state semifinalist and region rival Lassiter would likely have been the more fitting matchup for the Walton community, but Walton plays Lassiter on the road and ESPNU preferred to profile the Raiders at Raider Valley.

“We were all very excited for Coach (Rocky) Hidalgo and his coaching staff,” Suttle said. We’re very excited to showcase our school and athletic program. It’s a great opportunity for the kids who will be playing in a year or so on a larger platform, and it gives them exposure.”

Walton had a perfect season prior to its 24-0 loss to Grayson in the state championship. The Raiders cruised through region competition by averaging 35 points a game while giving up just eight.

The Raiders appear to be in good shape offensively, and the nation will have a chance to see it firsthand. Tyren Jones was Cobb County’s leading rusher last season with 2,375 yards and 33 touchdowns. Quarterback Parker McLeod is also returning, and both are on track to be teammates at Alabama next year. Walton should also benefit from a strong offensive line behind Georgia commit Brandon Kublanow.

Its defense took a hit to graduation led by twin defensive backs Zack and Daron Blaylock, who are both starting their college careers at Kentucky and will be less experienced this season with only three starters returning.

The Raiders have a knack for reloading instead of rebuilding and are expecting big things from lineman Blake Montz, who had seven sacks last season.

“I think it will be a great experience for our kids,” Hidalgo said. “It kind of shows where our program is. ESPN wants to come show Walton on a national scale, and that shows what caliber players we have.”

I played football at Walton for the 1980 and 1981 seasons. Had great coaches to play for in Coach Tommy Marshall and Coach Fred Sanderson. As a alumni of Walton, it will be a great pleasure to get to see the Raiders play again.

Walton doesnt recruit. we get transfers from other schools because their families move... I went and played for walton from 04 to 07. I played through the feeder program in middle school. To me this is one of the main reasons they are probably one of the best programs out their. Starting at a young age we are trained to be the best no through strength alone but also technique. on every team the walton has you will see a lot of key players have come up through this program.

Great, another east cobb school being made to look good (much like pope and lassiter)while really being one of the worst drug schools around. FYI no amount of trophies, test scores, or tv spots stop the pills and heroin from being done in the bathroom. Grew up in EC, I'm not ignorant to the truth like ESPN.

Can everyone stop using this article as a reason to trash talk a football team that has earned its opportunity to play in front of a nationally televised audience. This isnt about just last years team, its about all the Walton Football teams of the past. I played from 2005-2008 and it was some of the best years of my life. We won alot of games and NEVER got credit as a state power in football. Now that they are finally recieving some well earned recognition, I am happy for the players, because in the end, its all about the guys in the helmets and pads playing a game that they love. Recruiting? Overrated? Trash talking players that have earned great scholarship opportunities? You obviously know nothing about what the sport is really about. Its not about the press or the rankings or what coach is getting paid what. ITS A GAME. We play the game cuz we love it, and I cant stand people like the ones that trash talk hard working players and teams because they are jealous. Unbelievable...SMH

Walton gives no credit to any other sports, except football. I won 3 state rugby championships back, to back, to back and wasn't even recognized any of waltons staff.by mr suttle , who happened to be my 3rd grade math teacher. As an alumni of Walton I would hope to see them lose on national television only because I was never recognized by my "wonderful" school of excellence. Go raiders....

Robert McPherson. Hard to believe you would hold such a grudge for any number of years over your high school alumni. As an alumni of Walton myself I am proud of the accomplishments and accolades WHS continues to get. Your victories too. Here is your online pat on the back for a job done. If you haven't made it to the real world yet, let me be the voice of obvious. No one gives a ___ about you. You holding on to such angst for such a period of time must be a sign of the lack of love from your parents. For that I am truly sorry. If it is because of drugs or adverse reactions to steroids, that is on you. I had a great family support and several medical issues growing up, but I learned who my friends were fast (especially at Walton) and made even better friends in college when I was able to see outside the East Cobb bubble. You are where you are today because of decisions you made yesterday. Try to climb a mountain and tell no one. For that you will truly feel victorious.

I went to Walton as well and, from what I saw, all sports got the credit they deserved! More people attended the football games so they got more coverage, but that doesn't mean any other sport got dismissed, especially after winning a championship. Football is the number one watched sport in our country, what do you expect?! It blows my mind that you hope they lose. Those kids have busted their asses to get where they are today. That's a little selfish of you, don't you think? As for being recognized by Coach Suttle... he's a busy man. When I went there he had a lot on his plate and he wasn't even an administrator at that point. You can't be bitter towards him or any of the other teachers at Walton for not recognizing and congratulating every member of every sport at that school. That's just ridiculous.

Congrats on three state championships. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't rugby a club sport at Walton? Football is the highest attended sport at Walton and has a much larger following compared to Rugby on both the high school, Collegiate and Professional levels in America. Every sport believe that they deserve more respect and coverage juts be happy with your championships and cheer on you Alma Mater.

Raider Fans,

Try not to choke when you play on TV. Little bit of free advice for your Raider Coaches - Brookwood is gonna stuff the run like Grayson did and force you to throw the ball. There is your exposure. The joke of the GA Invitational 7on7 was how many INTs your High Profile QB threw. I guess you haven't figured out how to get Tyren to throw the ball for you yet. Haha. Our Sophomore QB is better than your guy.

I cannot wait for September 14th. Raiders should play North Cobb on TV. Walton was so over rated and beat a sorry lassiter team last year. What does 8 injured players have to do with throwing INTs? Already making excuses for being over rated. Pfft.
Try again...

Hey, 'For what?' Must be a bummer to be so miserable. The Walton coaches have had many opportunities to coach at the college level but choose to stay. No one will be jumping ship to go to the college level. That's one of the reasons for the success of the program is that the coaching staff almost always stays intact. And do you mean, 'Admin to PAD their pockets, or 'PAID' their pockets?' What does that even mean? No one is getting kickbacks, you idiot. Why so negative? It's so much work to host an event like this but contracts have to be signed and the financial numbers would be available to the public if you'd only ask and not be accusatory. Walton didn't recruit anyone so not sure why you're saying that. It's a well known fact that Tyren Jones and his entire family made a move from a school that passes and occasionally runs the ball. Walton is notorious for running the ball, so you do the math. It worked in his favor, too, as he now has a scholarship to Alabama. If you'd like to tattle on a school that's actively recruiting, just go and check out Lassiter. They have acquired Ryan Jenkins from Milton (just committed to Clemson), the Purdue brothers from Campbell (both D-I prospects) a linebacker from Wheeler and a corner from Harrison. And their 'recruiting coordinator' (he knows who he is) isn't done. Still out there wheeling and dealing. But back to Tyren. His dad will tell you point blank that the FAMILY decision was made in their minds during Tyren's sophomore year. And it's also for their daughters, as they are premiere athletes, too. Carrie, Jake is correct. Walton lost in the semis to Parkview (Jeff Franceour was on the team) and in the semis to North Gwinnett. You may be thinking that since it was in the Dome, that was the championship. The semis used to be played in the Dome but that changed a couple years ago and now just the 5 state championships are played in the Dome. With the new AAAAAA classification this year, there will be 6 games played!!

@sonegative You are and idiot. Leave Lassiter's name out of your post. We were actually happy for you guys playing on TV. And as far as the recruiting accusations you can stick that in your ear.

FYI: "For what?" is too stupid to be a Lassiter parent.

You can stop defending the Tyren transfer. Everyone knows it was done legally.

I do like the excerpt:

The Raiders have a knack for reloading instead of rebuilding and are expecting big things from lineman Blake Montz, who had seven sacks last season.

"The Tyren Jones Show" was fun to watch last year. You can't be serious by saying he only got an Alabama Scholarship because he went to Walton. He would have gotten a scholarship to where ever he wanted because of his talents.

A lot of people were laughing at the 7on7 when the entire Walton team was between the 20 and the 40 yard lines except for Tyren and his Dad. You don't coach Tyren, his Dad does and don't you forget it.

PLEASE EVERYONE stop with the recruiting stuff. ANY school that is good at a given sport is going to have move-ins and transfers. Walton, Lassiter, etc, etc, etc (Wheeler in basketball, Milton in basketball).

This is nothing new. Walton has had that for years in football and to a somewhat lesser extent, basketball. Lassiter has had people move in to the district for baseball for a number of years. Just because a school has transfers and such doesn't mean it is recruiting...if that was the case any number of schools all over the state would be in deep, deep trouble.

While it is true there are new faces at Lassiter this year, I also expect there are new transfers/move-ins at Walton/Kell/Grayson/N. Gwinnett/Camden/Colquitt/etc. As long as they have addresses in a given district or were given transfers by the DISTRICTS for whatever reasons, there should be no complaining by any school.

Happy Cobb gets to have a team on national TV though. Wish it was Walton-Lassiter, since that is a very big rivalry, but since it is at Lassiter this year no dice.

@Tim Burnes: Are you posting under your full real name? Just curious because it's awfully close to my name and I don't want the people I know at Walton to think it's me. If Tyren's dad is the one coaching him then he's doing a hell of a job and I'm sure the Walton coaching staff appreciates it.

@sonegative,

How do you know the other students who transfered didn't transfer for the very same reasons that Tyren did. I guess for you the only good transfer is a Walton transfer.

To 'Late Response', more power to them. Good for them if it betters their situation. We're just sick of the whining in the East Cobb community about Tyren leaving to Lassiter, a program with a passing game, to go to Walton, known for their running game. Get over it. Better yet, stop LYING about Tyren leaving because Walton bought his family a house and bought his father a car and all the other utter fabrications that were buzzing in the rumor mill. People think the GHSA should get involved with all the transfers in the state and thank heavens they are staying out of it. Like they said, 'Who are we to stop families from making decisions to improve their child's situation and/or future.
For what?

July 31, 2012
Exposure for what? The coaches to jump to a bigger program? Admin to paid their pockets? The school to add to its already long list of recruited transfers? Not for the players. The talent is already known by the college coaches. Never been an issue being recruited from a quality Cobb School.

If you have evidence to support your claims, we will be happy to talk with you about it. However, if you are unwilling to go on the record, please stop throwing out unwarranted accusations.

I think what they mean is that it's great exposure for the school. By the way, Coach Hidalgo has been at Walton for 16 years, and most of the coaches have been there over a decade. I don't think they are going anywhere. Also, I don't think the administration actually takes any of the money from the gate receipts. That would probably be illegal. Besides all of that -- great comments though.

This is to watch a recruit Brandon Kublano... He is going to be the biggest name in high school sports this year, the guy is a monster and is a truly humble, sweet kid, but a terror on the field... Check him out.

I was on the team in 2007 and sorry to burst your bubble but we were not in the finals. North Gwinnett was the semifinals. Last years team was the first to ever make it to the State Championship

Raider coaches better get real, change up, make adjustments, Dj Smith is a play maker, point blank, hands down, get him the ball, he gets plenty of rest on defense, teams dont come his way but 2-3 times a game, he is the Deion Sanders of Georgia which is why he wears the #21-After the Wheeler game im nick naming him "ShoTime" instead of primetime, no doubt that everything goes thru Tyren but when you see 45 people in the box, change up, get Dj the ball, Wheeler was killin you with a little running back that weighed 165lbs, go to a 4-4 or a 5-2 or Milton gonna kill yall, once again, get Dj the ball, he has been the best athlete at Walton since he stepped on the campus his freshman year.
