MARIETTA — Most students in Cobb County will start school around the same time as last year and follow the same holiday schedule.

Students at The Walker School in Marietta will see the biggest change. They will go back to school Aug. 13, five days later than last year, under what is commonly known as the balanced calendar. The school also shortened the winter break and moved it from March to February.

Jack Hall, Walker’s head of school, said most parents were pleased with the changes.

School administrators also decided that Thanksgiving will be observed Nov. 21 through 23; Christmas holiday will be Dec. 24 through Jan. 4, 2013; winter break will run Feb. 14 through 18, 2013; and spring break will be April 8 through 12, 2013. Graduation will be on May 18, 2013, and the last day of school will be May 24, 2013.

It is ashame kids have to start so early.. as a working parent it is harder to find someone to watch a child in all those days out during the year than one continues time during the summer.

As a supporter of one of the challengers, I am more than a little disturbed at what is happening in race for school board, post 5.

We have put out hundreds of signs in legal areas only to have them torn down or destroyed. This is very strange and bizarre behavior for a candidate to actively participate in. It really is time for a new voice in Post 5.

I thought it was kind or weird to see Hanson signs up one day and then missing a few days later. This explains a lot!

the loss of the far superior balanced calendar, ripped away before it ever was given a chance, by opportunistic politicos who got it wrong and who will be soon voted out. Shameful behavior.

Although I too thought the balanced calendar was nice, I do have to question your sign on name. Please tell me that this calendar has not caused you to continue to mourn. A little shallow in the scheme of things.

yes, fyi, I am mourning, for the calendar change in and of itself was very destructive, and the way the board handled it, by ignoring the survey and the will of the voter and not giving it a chance after it was published it would last 3 years..yes, I am mourning...call it shallow, I call the way it was handled destructive and deceitful. and furthermore, I could care less what you think about my opinion...

Cobb on a traditional calendar; 2011-2012 CRCT scores were up across the board and so were the EOCTs.

Hmmm... less days in school, started later, no breaks in September and February; I know there is a message in there somewhere.

I have no idea why the state of Georgia feel they have to begin school in August. All states in the north begin the TRUE traditional calendar which is after Labor Day. This notition that the first semester has to be completed for seniors who want to begin college second semester is crazy. How many seniors? Or that kids forget the semester curriculum for exams. We are sitting at the bottom of the barrel, so none of that washes. It is way too hot and ridiculous that we take away the money for the economy. Whitewater and Six FLags should be open for all those traveling through our state.

@Delta is: typical response of an uneducated redneck. Don't take any advice or try to learn something from the obviously superior systems, just throw overused smarmy barbs and keep your head in the sand.
