DALLAS — A veteran Cobb elementary teacher who is fighting to keep her job amid what she says is discrimination from a new principal woke up Sunday to find a threatening message written on her car windows.

Elizabeth Nilsen, who just completed her sixth year teaching at Hayes Elementary in Kennesaw and 12th year as an educator, has filed two complaints against Hayes Elementary Principal Teressa Watson. She believes those complaints prompted someone to write “will Watson win — U will lose if you don’t back off” on the passenger side of her car in what appears to be a white paint pen.

“Whoever did it kind of knew how to do it the right way,” she said. “We had also been seeing for about a week and a half a red van around the neighborhood and parked in front of my house twice Friday night.”

Corp. Ashley Henson with the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office said the vandalism happened between 10 p.m. Saturday and 7:20 a.m. Sunday. Pictures of her vehicle were taken for evidence and patrol officers were notified of potential vandals or suspicious vehicles.

Watson and school district officials declined to comment for this report.

Nilsen filed her first complaint against Watson in March, claiming the principal was discriminating against teachers based on their age, race or disabilities.

Nilsen is a 43-year-old white woman who is legally blind. She lost her sight in one eye and has a retina implant in the other.

She filed the second complaint in April, accusing Watson of falsifying documents after she allegedly signed and dated her teacher evaluation April 2, nearly a week before she actually signed the document.

Nilsen said her problems with Watson began last November after she was given bad marks on her classroom evaluation.

“When I went for my feedback, she chewed me apart,” Nilsen said. “The way (principals) can start a paper trail is to attack us on our performance.”

She said Watson was supposed to schedule a second evaluation but instead showed unannounced one day and gave her another bad review.

“After that, she came in once or twice a week … (and) put me on a (Professional Development Plan),” she said. “I wasn’t given a choice not to sign (the PDP). It was a stressful situation.”

Nilsen said Watson gave her articles to read, study and report on to help come off the PDP, but eventually Nilsen’s health got the best of her.

“My doctor put me on medical leave March 6 because I was at a heart attack and stroke level … due to malignant hypertension induced by (Watson),” she said.

According to an Open Records Request, which Nilsen had to file in order to learn the ruling of the complaints, the principal was cleared of any wrongdoing.

Nilsen will have a hearing about her teaching contract and Watson’s recommendation to not renew it at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the boardroom off Glover Street in Marietta. Board members Kathleen Angelucci, Alison Bartlett and Board Chair Scott Sweeney will preside over the hearing.

The hearing was canceled early Wednesday.

Nilsen said she was advised by her doctor not to attend the meeting due to her high blood pressure. She is at risk of losing her remaining eyesight in her good eye if she undergoes any more stress.

John Adams, executive director for Educators First, which is representing Nilsen, said, “The investigative report indicated that Watson essentially admitted falsely backdating Nilsen’s annual evaluation form.”

“To my knowledge there have been at least a half a dozen other principals or administrators who were demoted or worse for similar infractions.”

Watson was named the principal of Hayes Elementary in mid-June after the district combined the Intermediate and Primary schools for next school year.

Adams said he does not think the Cobb school board was aware that Watson was under investigation when they approved her reassignment.

He also said a number of teachers at Hayes have contacted him since June concerned about her being named the sole principal.

In 2009, a group of protesters from a Fayetteville-based teachers union, Metro Association of Classroom Educators, picketed outside Hayes, calling for Watson’s removal because of her approach to education.

Speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution, two callers said teachers were being micromanaged and forced to spend hours on unnecessary paperwork, leaving little time to teach, the Journal reported in October 2009.

School is out of control. Principal has no clue how to fix it so she is covering up the huge discipline issues. Kids are beating each other up on a regular basis but the administration does nothing to resolve the issue. I often see my kids teachers leaving work at 5 pm in order to meet the demands of this pathetic example of school administration. I wish I could get my children in another school. The few conversations I have had with my kids teachers they are trying to leave as well. My favorite quote from a teacher at Hayes, "I would rather wash dishes and clean toilets than work at Hayes another year." Superintendent Hinojosa it is time for a change at Hayes! We want our once wonderful school back. Get rid of this poor excuse for a principal.

I agree with everything you said. I see and hear the same thing. I think it is up to us parents to try to change the situation. The Teachers hands are tied. I wish the MDJ would do a follow up story about Hayes.

We received a letter that our child's teacher was also leaving this past week. I think this makes two more teachers who have left since you posted. What's going on at Hayes? Is anyone above the Area Superintendent sitting up and taking notice?

RE: Wake Up People - Thank you for saying what many of us know to be true. The Hayes territory covers some of the most expensive real-estate in Cobb County, yet many of the parents who would gladly send their children to public school have opted to do otherwise, because someone on Glover Street decided to spot zone large numbers of Hispanic students into Hayes and Pine Mountain. The school district will throw all sorts of money into being "inclusive", but little or no money into retaining students who excel. Go Figure.

Well, it looks like she's gonna get away with it again! Another year of ridiculously detailed lesson plans and overwhelming paperwork while her "inner circle" of teachers sit in their very large, unused classrooms behind closed doors holding secret meetings all day. Instead of coaching and helping the teachers they will run Watson's errands and do her dirtywork as professional tattle-tales. I just wish it was truly about what is best for the kids. It's so sad that it is not. It's all about test scores!

For those familiar with Hayes, we can all agree that the "school within a school" program was an abject failure. David Peirce, although a decent man was a poor leader and detached from students and parents which is why he was assigned elsewhere. Whether you like or dislike Watson, the fact remains that ANYONE who has to serve in that capacity at Hayes has a mountain to climb. Hayes is annually rated at or near the lowest performing schools in West Cobb. Why? The "elephant in the room" that no one has mentioned in these comments is Hayes' inordinantly high (and growing) population low income and Hispanic students. Please don't read this as being racist. Just reality. The amount of resources Hayes has to commit towards teaching Hispanic children is draining the dwindling resources available to the school which of course, negatively affects teachers, students and administration. I've even heard that a Hayes administrator is teaching English classes to parents! Do you seriously think Mr. H. is going to ride up to Hayes on his white horse and attack this issue? If so, there's a big hunk of rock just south of Barrett Pkwy. that I'd like to sell to you.

As far as the vandalism, at the risk of sounding like CSI, did anyone notice all of the writing is on the windows where it could be easily removed and not where it could damage the paint?
@Wake Up
|
July 31, 2012
Maybe Dr. Hinojosa will embrace this issue instead of attack it. The school boundary lines were intentionally and disproportionately drawn years ago, but maybe our new Superintendent, who happens to be Hispanic, may have some good ideas for some kind of relief. Mr. Carter hasn't offered many solutions.

P.S. I see writing on the paint between the panes of glass. The vandalism doesn't seem to intentionally avoid painted areas.

Are other people aghast at the spelling & grammar mistakes in these comments? :)

July 30, 2012
So you are saying that we should discriminate against a teacher because she is legally blind? What other disabilities should we discriminate against in the teaching community? The deaf? Teachers in wheelchairs? Where would you draw the line? I trust her judgement that if she feels her disability would negatively impact her ability to be an effective teacher, she would resign.

I was merely asking a question, you don't have to get all defensive on me. How could you teach in an elementary school, you couldn't discipline a student if you can't see what they did.
re:job back
|
July 30, 2012
She is not totally blind and the article never said that. She can not drive a car but more than able to see to teach. Not all teachers who can see are the greatest at teaching. It also comes from heart and that is what has for those students.

July 27, 2012
I left Cobb County Schools many, many years ago due to a principal and assistant principal who would change my lesson plans when they were "reviewing" them weekly and then they would belittle me for giving too much work.

Well stupid me! I came back to Cobb more than 5 years ago. My 1st year was great then a new principal that did not hire me came in for her reign on the throne. This cream of the crop school has lost many excellent teachers due to the playing of favorites while those that watch movies, TV shows, shop on the computers, and text their friends sit in their offices and do not even go out to half their classes get to maintain their jobs. There is a lot of bullying of those that do not hang out with their departments or the "A listers". Cobb County had better get a grip on what some of these administrators are doing to drive out outstanding teachers and then not being able to bring in young, new teachers who have heard about the games being played by too many.

Does anyone else think that it's coincidental that Mrs Watson was on vacation the same time that the car was vandalized. How convienant is that?

Someone has been watching CSI.

If the Cobb County School Administration isnt paying attention to this blog they are putting their own jobs on the line.

I have spoke with several upper level government officials and they are outraged that the school system operates in a manner that is Gestapo in nature.

Be assured that an investigation is coming and heads are going roll and the new school superintendent is going to take the blame for his subordinates mistakes.

In the end the news is going to have a heyday with this and many people are going to be outright embarrassed when the news crew shows up at their doorstep demanding an explanation.

Also, Human Resources needs to get off their butts and do their jobs in relation to employee rights and harassment.

Your department is going to get hit severly because your not aware or have not reported and taken action in the abusive nature of the administration. Surveys about individual management has a way of finding out who and where your problems reside. .

I have heard rumor that past upper management Cobb County Administrators resigned because of Cobbs way of doing business and they are willing to tell all to State Investigators.

If your looking for an upper level job in the Cobb County School System start getting your resumes together.

More than likely, vacancies will be coming if not already come Monday morning.

Nervous at Hayes
|
July 27, 2012
As a teacher at Hayes, I am very apprehensive about the coming school year. It is true that Watson will create a case against someone she does not like even if the teacher is an excellent teacher. She has an inner circle of favorites and bullies the rest of her staff. She talks down to staff in meetings and attempts to intimidate through sarcastic remarks. Watson creates a very negative culture; she micromanages her staff. One example is lesson plans - teachers will spend 3 - 4 hours a week typing lesson plans in a computer system using the exact format that she requires. The time would be better spent actually preparing resources for the students' lessons.

I am a good educator; I love the children. I work hard to produce positive academic and social growth as well as instill in them a life long love of learning. In my classroom I strive to create a safe environment for my students to speak out, ask questions, feel welcomed and respected. Many, many times I have spent extra money, time, and other resources to make certain children have snacks, coats, socks, etc that some children are not provided at home. Additionally, I have spent many hours outside of school assisting students with concepts they struggle with. Most teachers at Hayes use their personal resources to provide the same for their students.

As teachers create the classroom environment, the principal creates the school environment. Watson micromanages her teachers and does not create an environment where her teachers feel respected. This type of climate is unhealthy and undermines a teacher's positive attitude. I will continue to smile, work toward my students' success, do EXACTLY what I am told, not bring any attention to myself, and "fly under the radar."

July 27, 2012
I to work at Hayes and have had trouble with Mrs.Watson. I was called into her office and was belittled for the way my lesson plans were layed out. ok ----I copied someones on her "good list" since I was sick that whole week and the weekend. I had permission from that teacher to do it since we were on the same unit and same lesson. I was even threatend to be written up since they were not done to her satisfaction. The teacher I copied them from got an award with a little red construction paper kudos for such great lesson plans that week---the ones I copied!! If you want more instances of her being a bully, her favorite list of teachers who get away with anything and so on than ask the private investigator that was sent from Cobb County Schools over the summer to tak to teachers who taught in Hayes. The conclusion she should be removed. OHHH yeah, that work she did was thrown out the window and they hired someone to start over since they did not like her outcome. So...the second time SHE gave the teachers names SHE wanted interviewed. Please help us at HAYES and open your eyes to what should be done.
good idea
|
July 28, 2012
Why would the county ignore results they got from the investigator they hired and paid to look into the Hayes/Watson issue? Didn't the investigator speak to over a dozen people? Maybe more??

It seems like a good idea to start with a clean slate. She could start the year off at a new school and Hayes could start off as the revised 'whole school' again with a new principal.

Isn't it Cobb Policy to have lesson plans?
Re: Nervous
|
July 30, 2012
Whether it's policy or not, it's good practice to have lesson plans. However, most teachers, including myself, would like to be able to use a lesson plan format that works well for them. We all have ways that we organize ourselves in our professional and personal lives. We find ways that work for us and use them. The issue is when you are told that you have to write your lesson plans THIS WAY and you have to teach THIS WAY and you have to set up and manage your classroom THIS WAY. There is no freedom left to be the individual you are as a teacher. We are supposed to teach to the individual differences of our students, but we are not allowed to express our individuality in the classroom.

Been there. Done that. I've worked for principals that disliked children and didn't know the names of any. I've seen older teachers and a gay teacher bullied to the point of resignation.

I've seen principals lock teachers in their office for HOURS to berate and mock, all in an attempt to get a resignation. Most administrators using this approach were up to their eyebrows in brown-nosing suck-ups. If a teacher didn't play politics, chances were pretty good that you'd be targeted. God forbid that a teacher might actually want to have a loving, nurturing environment for her students. THE PRINCIPAL SETS THE TONE FOR THE SCHOOL!

After a long, successful teaching career, I'm thrilled to have my FIRST principal that treats students, parents, and teachers with respect. She doesn't "play favorites" and treats everyone the same. She attacks problems with staff in a fair and calm manner. The regular brown-nosing gang have finally met their match and for the first time in many years, they are following the rules and meeting responsibilities. I'm thankful to be going out with a quality leader that understands her job and supports my effort to have a quality experience for my students.

My heart goes out to the students, parents and teachers at Hayes. I don't know what is going on there but I do know, the environment sounds poisoned. CC central office needs to get in the trenches and spend time there. The situation is sad.

Reading this story made me want to cry for Liz. I should have made a formal complaint upon leaving Hayes, but I was afraid of repercussion and burning bridges. I definitely felt that I was on the "bad list." I was not treated fairly on several occasions, examples including not being supported with parent issues or even being asked my side before being judged, poor evaluations that were unfair (I had NEVER been given a poor evaluation by any other administrator), and ultimately being told that I would be placed on a PDP. I certainly had room to grow as a teacher, as many teachers do, but I was not an inadequate teacher by any means and my students always made progress. Mrs. Watson had a way of bringing down the entire staff morale by doing things such as announcing to a room full of already overworked and exhausted teachers, who I feel really love their jobs, that they were "slacking" and "doing the bare minimum to skate by." Her micromanaging style of management makes teachers feel they are walking on eggshells. She definitely has her favorite teachers--obviously those who have commented positively. I loved the students, my fellow teachers, and the staff at Hayes. I greatly disliked working for Teressa and have not looked back on my decision to leave. I hope that Cobb County re-evaluates the concerns and makes the right decision.

It is not only at Hayes. It is throughout Cobb. The administrators of Cobb (I have had a few wonderful ones)for the most part rule by fear, intimidation, and soar on their absolute power to make the lives of teachers pure hell. After being in the county for almost 20 years and at several schools, I still hope that somehow karma will come around...

O.C.G.A. 50-18-70 through 77, called the Georgia Open Records Act, establishes the right of every citizen to inspect and take a copy of all records except those specifically exempt from being open.

Has anyone pursued this?
They Should
|
July 27, 2012
Yes, in one Cobb school the Open Records Act meant that the VERY principal being asked to provide the documentation was the one who went through her e-mails and printed them. Shouldn't someone else do the digging? Don't we have techies who are supposed to do this type of work, so that all information is produced?

Many of us would like to thank the person or persons that vandalized her car.

You have brought this event out and into the open for all to see. Now it just gets better as the News Agencies are getting their fill on just who Mrs Watson is.

Being a strict and hard line administrator is one thing but undermining the teaching staff is a whole different situation.

If it comes to light that Mrs Watson was just following orders from the Cobb County School Administration to chase off some of the current staff, that is about to come to the surface as well.

Again, job well done Idiot Vandals as you have definitly got the attention of the Governors Office as well.

Just a reminder, it has not been determined who vandalized the car. The list of possible suspects just might include, ironically, the very person you seem to support here. But nobody has ever seen anybody vandalize their own church, spray paint their own house, write their onw blog or trash their own campaign signs for their own attention - now have we? Have we? Just seems very suspicious to me. But thanks for bringing this possible outcome to our attention.

Wow, not the way we wanted to start off the school year. There are FANTASTIC teachers at Hayes and yes 1 or 2 bad ones, but that is the case with just about EVERY school in this county. Same goes for principals. It is actually very difficult to fire a teacher or principal. There has to be numerous forms of documentation and usually they just get re-assigned to another school (sad to say). What hurt Hayes was the decision to make it a "school within a school". You have one administrator expecting one thing from his staff and the other administrator expecting something completely different. Now that we are going back to one school, there is going to be some confusion. We lost some really great teachers for next year, but I am hopeful that we will gain some good ones as well. Does Teressa make good decisions? Not always, for example, a large classroom of children with special needs was stuck out in a trailer, while there were full size classrooms being wasted on academic coaches. Also, I really don't see her handling behavior issues much. She has done a good job with promoting curriculum nights for parents and children. She is not as visible to parents as Mr. Pearce was and this may upset some parents who were used to that. I truly hope she is not "targeting" teachers.

You have to remember, the county does not give teachers the opportunity to "evaluate" their administrators and to speak out against one openly can lead to retribution, so many teachers keep their mouths shut. The principals are evaluated by their superiors and lets face it they are rarely at the schools and have no clue what is going on in them.

What happened to Ms. Nilsen's car is sad and unwarranted and makes Hayes look bad in general. I am proud of our school and the staff that work there and I hope this does not put a damper on our school year.

It should NOT matter if an evaluation is announced or unannounced.... ALL teachers should be at their best everyday and not only on announced evaluation days. As a teacher I welcome the Administration in my class any day of the week. This teacher complaining that the evaluation was unannounced sends up a BIG red flag to me.
evaluation
|
July 26, 2012
These evaluations are to be announced since there are special things the teacher must follow according to the check list. Not everything on the checklist can be done for EVERY lesson. If so then the teacher would be behind in every subject. There is also unannounced visits which is true but the one she was assigned to do was an announced. She did not follow proper procedure plain and simple. We are expected to follow it so this should be as well. Even the evaluations and meeting after the to disucss them were not in the Cobb mandated time frame. I have even seen another teacher get a bad review on her evaluation because she changed the paper work the assigned that day. She had to change it since the copy machine was broken again. Watson also pulled out the regular ed teacher to cover another room that was short a teacher. This left the special ed teacher to teach the whole class. By state law this is NOT to happen. If you take away what is needed for a classroom to function properly you take away from the students. Evaluations should be done by more than one person and if there is special needs in the room then a teacher who is specialized in this area should also be present. The same goes if Watson or any pricipal is to evaluate a specialized class, be it math, reading, etc then that person who evaluates them should be trained in that area. A change needs to be made so this with Ms.Nilsen and the many others in Cobb are not forgotten.

A good majority have either lost site of, or just completely fail to mention that this is about vandalism more than anything. Regardless of who is right or wrong, this teacher didn't deserve to have some pitiful cowards write all over her vehicle. Also, not all of these teachers can be wrong. This is not Watson's first run-in with a teacher claiming these things. It's happened before, and if she gets away it with, it will happen again.

Everyone knows that this principle caused many problems last year. She failed to even follow her own rules and failed to support her teachers at public events. Where was she?

The Cobb County School system is setting themselves up for law suit after law suit.

The three great and awesome teachers that left was because of her. BOTTOM LINE!

Are some of you that nieve?

More teachers are now looking to leave Hayes to avoid this woman. Even the black teachers admit that she is racist.

The investigation that was performed resulted in a recommendation that she NOT be put into this principle position. Cobb School System decided otherwise.

I can't wait for the picketing and the racial lawsuits to ensue.

Parents, so much for peace and harmony amongst the teachers this year. Thank your Cobb County School admin for ruining the year.
On her good list
|
July 26, 2012
I was one of those on her good list thank God. I have seen her go after teachers and set them up to fail, I have seen her not support her teachers in public activities that all the other pricipals go to, I have witnessed her to treat the special needs teachers different in a negative way, very sarcastic and demeaning in her laughter and even to the extent of the children. She was not there for the kids, she was there for her own benefits to climb to the top. She has admitted to doing false activities on paper work (which by the way is NOT the first time but she never got caught and the teachers know not to speak out or they are next on the list. Hayes has lost quite a few VERY, VERY good teachers who had excellent reviews on their evaluations. They were not told to leave but left due to the atmosphere of intimidation and negative atmosphere. I am speaking out on this site since I can't in person due to being on the 'bad list' of speaking out what is not right.
