POWDER SPRINGS — Brad Wheeler, one of three people vying to be the Republican nominee for Cobb School Board Post 7, said district finances are a top priority. He also doesn’t believe a revised Strategic Plan will have any effect on student learning.

The winner of the July 31 primary will face Democrat incumbent Alison Bartlett on the Nov. 6 ballot. Bartlett was elected in 2008, but the district was reapportioned this year to include more of wealthy west Cobb.

Wheeler, 57, is a retired school administrator originally from upstate New York. He taught and coached at Pebblebrook High for 17 years and was an administrator at McEachern High for nine years. He still fills in as a substitute administrator in Cobb schools.

“Our goal should be to provide the best education we can afford for our children,” he said. “It appears we have money for ‘pet’ projects and not essentials in the classroom where learning takes place.”

Wheeler said he didn’t believe the revised Strategic Plan, which the board has been rewriting since early spring, would have any affect on student learning. He hesitated to say how he’ll vote on the Nov. 6 proposed constitutional amendment to allow state-created charter schools because he is still studying the issue.

However, the former educator was firm in stating that he does not support Teach For America.

“It makes no sense to offer positions to recent college graduates who have not been trained when we are cutting back our current staff,” he said.

Wheeler also said he wouldn’t support using the $25 million in Race to the Top funds the district is applying for to pay for the TFA program’s costs.

“A lot of that federal stuff has strings to it,” he said. “You’d have to know what the strings are before you support it.”

In regards to Cobb Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa recently sending nearly 150 district staff members and educators to Orlando for the Model Schools Conference, Wheeler called it a public relations “disaster.”

“We need to look at better ways, which are less costly, to achieve our goals,” he said.

He’s been campaigning by using Facebook, asking friends to help promote his campaign and just talking to whoever he sees on the street.

“You’re starting at square one, one step at a time,” he said. “It’s not just an overnight thing.”

According to the June 30 campaign finance report, Wheeler has collected about $1,140 in donations for his campaign, and has a balance of about $241.

Too often strategic plans are written to fulfill some requirement and are just busy work in that respect. Often they are written by those with little or no training in the art and science of strategic planning. That is one good thing about an MBA, you are usually given expert training on writing these plans. I'm not so sure that educational leadership programs put the same focus on this.

A true strategic plan is a tremedous amount of work and is a long term plan with measurable objectives and is followed up on regularly. I wonder which of these this plan is?

I have known Brad for 2 years and agree with every endorsement I've seen posted. He is a man of his word and I am confident he would do everything he could for each and every student. As far as I'm concerned, Experience Counts. He is the only one who has worked first hand with students/faculty from all over Cobb County. He knows what needs to be done and has the ideas on how to get there. I've seen first hand what he does for his community b/c I live in his neighborhood. He has volunteered so many hours of his personal time to make our community a better place to live. There is no doubt Brad would take this same dedication to the school board if elected. ELECT BRAD WHEELER!

I've known Brad for several years. I was thrilled when he entered the race for the school board. I can't think of a better person to have on the board. He will definitely put the kids first and he will not push any personal agendas.

No word on what his views are on the balanced calendar. More info please.

Since he actually worked in the schools and knows what it is like on the ground level, he is in favor of a balanced calendar. It's on his website.

So that's that. It seems that none of these candidates care for the health and safety of the kids. I seem to recall a time when everyone was opposed to having their summers wiped out by a bad calendar. But I guess Sanderson bought everyone, so do what you want to do. See if I care.

I'm not sure what you've been Observing, but you're completely out of touch with what's happening in the world (and schools). If you could see what it's like for students to go to school for ten straight weeks, you would be concerned about their "health and safety." The traditional calendar is detrimental to students and staff because its pressure never relents. Go ask teachers in early November what it's like to try to teach when no one has experienced a break since Labor Day.

Brad Wheeler is a good man who will always make logical decisions that are best for students and schools. I really hope he gets a chance to be on the school board because he actually understands what schools need to be successful. GO BRAD GO!
