Bohn shot rounds of 65-70 over the 7,089-yard, par 71 course to earn one of three spots into this month’s U.S. Open at Olympic Club in San Francisco June 11-17.
Nationwide Tour player and 2003 U.S. Amateur runner-up Casey Wittenberg of Memphis, Tenn., finished one stroke back, carding 68-68. Local club professional Tim Weinhart of Alpharetta, who teaches at The Standard Club in Johns Creek, earned his first trip to the Open, nabbing the final qualifying spot with a 137 (69-68).
Nationwide Tour player James Love of Canada fired a 66 in the first round, and then followed up with a 72 to earn first alternate. Former Harrison standout James White, who just graduated from Georgia Tech, grabbed the second alternate spot at 1-under 141.
Bohn made his big move during his opening round when he made eight birdies and two bogeys to post 6-under 65 at the mid-point of the competition. With needing only to play solid golf in the afternoon to likely secure spot, Bohn made three birdies and two bogeys for a second round 70.
This will be Bohn’s second trip to the U.S. Open. He qualified in 2008 when the tournament was held at Torrey Pines in San Diego, but missed the cut.
White shot rounds of 70-71 making seven birdies against six bogeys over the course of the day.
Other local players didn’t have as much success.
Former Etowah High School standout and current Georgia Tech player Anders Albertson shot rounds of 71 and 74 to finish in a tie for 15th, while Kennesaw State’s Benjamin Greene shot rounds of 78-75. Green was undone on the last three holes of his morning front nine. After reaching the seventh hole 1-under par, he finished the nine double bogey, par, quadruple bogey to shoot 41 on the side and effectively end his chances to qualify.
Another Kennesaw State player, Matt Nagy, will get his chance to qualify for his second U.S. Open today, when he plays in the sectional tournament at Germantown Country Club in Memphis, Tenn. Nagy qualified for the 2009 U.S. Open in Bethpage, N.Y.
