Joshua Richard Ganley, 27, of Marietta was at WellStar Kennestone Hospital after having surgery Friday morning, said Woodstock Police spokeswoman Brittany Duncan. He was expected to survive the gunshot wound.
Ganley is expected to be charged with theft by receiving after he stole a vehicle from a home in Cobb County, police said.
The vehicle was stolen on Tuesday from a home in the 3000 block of Bells Ferry Road near Kennesaw, said Officer Mike Bowman, public information officer with the Cobb County Police Department.
Cobb Police say they responded to a woman’s call around 7 p.m. Tuesday that her house was broken into earlier that day and her vehicle stolen. The woman, who said her home was unoccupied between 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. that day, reported her 2001 Nissan Frontier and jewelry taken from her home.
Bowman said it appeared the suspect forcibly entered the home through a window near the garage.
The woman’s vehicle has been impounded as part of the investigation since police said Ganley shot himself in the SUV after he was stopped.
Bowman said it’s unclear whether Ganley is the suspect in the burglary or whether he just took the woman’s vehicle.
“The investigator would have to do their legwork to determine if he was the person or perpetrator who broke in the house,” he said.
Woodstock Police stopped Ganley about 1 p.m. Thursday on Canton Road at Farm Ridge Drive near the Cherokee/Cobb county border, authorities said. Police stopped the 2001 Nissan Frontier after they had received information from the Georgia Crime Information Center, or GCIC, that it was stolen, they said.
Duncan said when officers asked Ganley to exit the vehicle, he reached for a .45-caliber handgun inside the vehicle and shot himself in the chest. Ganley had one leg in the vehicle and one leg out as if he was about to get out of the car, Duncan said.
Duncan said Ganley was conscious and alert when he was transported to the hospital.
