Hinojosa’s teacher plan a ‘road to failure’

DEAR EDITOR:

At a time when the Cobb School District is in the process of laying off teachers and increasing class sizes throughout the school district, Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa is effectively lowering the level of teacher proficiency everywhere and then proposes to spend valuable resources by adding 50 less qualified teachers to some of the lowest-level schools to bring them back to where they were before the cut-backs. That does nothing more than bring the high end of education in the CCSD down to a point where it is closer to the low end without improving anything at the bottom. That does nothing more than build a road to failure.

When do we stop acting smart and start educating our kids? If Dr. Hinojosa is searching for total equality, why doesn’t he simply shut down all of the schools and quit trying to get his arms around effective education? That would save a lot of money in tough times and all of our children would remain 100 percent equal — all dumb. Better yet, why doesn’t he look for a different job that he can get his arms around? Our children can’t afford any more of his brilliant ideas in Cobb County.

We've heard his story about growing up a poor Mexican boy so many times. It's getting old. Once everyone's heard it, what's he going to talk about then?

Cobb County will regret the day it hired Dr. Hinojosa.

I encourage Cobb citizens to research the record he fled in the DISD. (Dallas,Tx.).

He left them w/ a financial shortfall & massive teacher layoffs to come. He will recieve a lucrative pension from the Dallas Independent School District forever!

He lied about wanting to remain in Dallas, AFTER his new contract was renewed, against the wishes of many trustees.

One Dallas parent put it like this,..

"Welcome to the educational-industrial complex, where the barely competent w/ a proper demographic reap rewards & shop-hop & pension-gather, until the cows come home. Then, add to their haul, by being consultants to the districts in which they planted their sycophants. DSID & others around the country are led by administrators more intent on gaining access to the merry-go-round than educating our children. Shame on them & our society for accepting such self serving BS."

At best it's annoying to scroll through; at worst, some MAY BE USING IT to push other opinions far down the page.

Reform always has its critics, usually those deeply invested in continued failure.

Parents should view the film "Waiting for Superman" or read Steve Jobs' biography (p.544) for more on this.

Why is it that Mr Hinojosa gets an 8% 403b contribution when teachers are losing jobs, not getting 403b contributions, step increases are not happening, furlough days are increasing, etc.?

I just love how Mr. Stoll can consistently criticise but offer no solutions. Just an observation and criticism of my own. I'm not saying Hinojosa's idea was a good one. I for one don't think it was but I just love how people will rant and rave and yet offer no solutions to the perceived problem. If you're that unhappy with the way the Government works then do something about it.

With respect,

blogging a complaint using your real name is, to me , a form of doing something about it.

Your complaint about Jim Stoll is exactly what he did.

OK, so you want solutions. You might consider sending a team to Chicago and look up a classy lady and school administrator named Marva Collins. She ran a special high school there for 30 years that took 50 of the worst of the worst of the kids from Chicago's ghettos. The ones that were declared by other uncaring school administrators to be "unteachable". 98% of her students graduated from High School and most of them went on to college. I worked with her for about 10 years in the 70's, teaching her teachers how to use electronic technoly in their class programs. There are still people left in this country who know how to plan and run an effective educational enterprise that works. I would think that Hinojosa would know of some of them, given what he's getting paid and how much he talks about himself. I also worked with other school districts in the Chicago suburbs to develop computer based individualized education. I was involved with school districts to develop effective educational programs for 40 years and I know they can be planned to work. So, what have you done with your life other than jabber about those who consider our children to be the most important asset in our society and the future of our country. Nothing has seemed to work in Cobb County for the 10 years I have been following the CCSD thru three superintendants. I have become convinced that the reason that condition exist is because no one really cares. They are more interested in their own personal interests. I don't think they want solutions. The administrators all know how to talk the talk, but none of them know how to walk the walk.

OK Dad of 3, here are some solutions. I have never worked for a school, but I have been a teacher all of my life, 80 years now. My life experiences have taught me that there are only two methods to teach anything to any type of living thing. They are "Fear of Punishment" and "Hope for Reward". I have relatives who taught dolphins to stand out oof the water on their tails, in the hope of a reward snack. I trained attack dogs for a major city police department using both methods. I served as a scoutmaster of a 64 member troop for 10 years where I taught young boys how to grow into responsible adults. I developed 52 Eagle Scouts in those 10 years. We held a parent's meeting each month to recognize their achievements The same perameters for success that exist on a campout also work in a classroom. I owned my own business for 35 years, where I taught young salesmen how to convince their prospects to buy their offerings from them rather than their competitors. I taught other young technicians how to do their jobs in a manner that made their customers happy with their work. I taught registered engineers how to design integrated electronic systems that worked in newly constructed high rise buildings. I taught building owners how to use those systems most effectively. I was successful for all those years using the same methods that desperately need to be employed in our nation's classrooms today. "Fear of Punishment" and "Hope for Reward". If you don't believe that, buy a Boy Scout Leaders Manual and memorize it. The whole program is laid out in that book for all to see. The solutions are out there, all over the place. All one needs to do is look for them.

Anonymous: You're right. I will never be satisfied until I see our educational administrators and their staffs have stopped flushing the education of any of our children and with it, the future of America, down the provervial drain

Thank you for providing your life's resume in a nonsensical rant. However, I fail to see how any of this relates to improving the Cobb County Schools. The last time I checked there were kids enrolled in the Cobb schools not dogs or dolphins. Your aethistic credo of "hope" and "fear" in my opinion is not the best answer here. Marva Collins is an admirable person and is a good role model but she's not the Superintendent now is she? The point of my criticism is what specifically can Dr. Hinojosa do better? I'm still not hearing specifics.

Have you ever thought about the fact that we wouldn't have to bash a new super if any of them would ever do anything but talk, draw big paychecks and continue to dumb down our children.

....yeah,.. but he sure did fall into a SWEET deal in Cobb County. Doesn't he get free housing, free moving company, free gas, free vehicles , 90 days vacation on top of a $300,000 dollar salary??

Please MDJ, rerun his wage & perks!!

I read that he had done a lousy job in Dallas, & also brought his friends & family up from Mexico to work in the Dallas school system.

When I see him sitting there pretending to be listening to 'public comment', I think he's really just fantasizing about his next shopping spree or vacation.

What a huge WASTE of MONEY, he is!!
Embarrassd for you..

The inexperienced, untrained "teacher" plan is a HORRIBLE idea, but what can we expect from this group after the calendar fiasco.

January 27, 2012
The "HORRIBLE idea" was Morgan's and the Superintendents. It appears that the Board did not support the "idea" and that is likely reason the Super pulled it from the agenda.

So, it seems that you would agree with the board on this one.

Strange bedfellows are more common than many care to think about and all are well advised to keep their eyes on the big picture rather than single issues, what ever they may be.

We need to start holding parents accountable for their children's education. Look at the fantastic things that Grant Rivera did at South Cobb HS. He educated the parents and got them involved and got them to care. That's where we need to spend our time and energy.
