‘Square Supreme Soviet’ to run Marietta?

DEAR EDITOR:

I was utterly amazed to see your editorial supporting Councilman Grif Chalfant’s proposal to remake the Marietta Historic Board of Review.

Using the hole in the ground as part of the justification for the change is absurd. The only reason that the hole exists is that the Marietta politicians were threatening to take away Goldstein’s rights as a property owner. The run down “historic” building or a nice replacement building would be on the site today if the powers that be hadn’t threatened to take away his rights to control the property.

Further justification for the change is that the “historic” Tattoo parlor picked the wrong color awning. Give me a break.

The current Board is composed of a majority of political appointees and a few owners and renters of property on the square. The councilman proposes removing the merchants and owners from the board and installing a 100 percent politically appointed board with the Mayor and each councilman getting to put their own pet on the board.

No doubt the new Historic Square Supreme Soviet will centrally develop a five year plan and we will all see a great leap forward in the Square.

You are spot on, Tom. The hole is absolutely the result of a meddling (and mindless) city council that thought they were going to toy with Goldstein by changing the rules in the middle of the game. He did what they forced him to do and now they are complaining about the foreseeable resulting hole. It shows us just what low IQs we have on the city council.

When you elect nimrods, expect a lot of stupid stuff to happen...that's what nimrods do best.
