MARIETTA — The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on Friday that Marietta-based construction firm C.W. Matthews Contracting Co., Inc. has been awarded a $42.6 million project in Floyd County.

The company will be in charge of widening 5.5 miles of the West Rome Bypass from south of the Coosa River to north of State Route 20, as well as construct 10 new bridges in that corridor.

GDOT Commissioner Vance Smith said the project is part of more than $370 million in transportation improvements authorized by the state DOT this summer, and added that the department expected to approve another $100 million in new work at the end of September.
