Acworth Police Chief Mike Wilkie said after receiving a call from a neighbor who reported hearing noises and a possible fire at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, police and firefighters arrived to find the next door home at 4223 North Bend Way in Acworth off Acworth Due West Rd. on fire.
When Cobb firefighters entered the home they found Dianne Hutcheson, 64, and her son Shawn Hutcheson, 42, dead from apparent gunshots.
"It's a pretty cut and dry case of murder-suicide," Wilkie said.
Police say the son, who lives in Colorado, was visiting his mother in Acworth.
Dianne Hutcheson was separated from her husband, Timothy Hutcheson, but police immediately ruled out the husband as a suspect after interviewing him at his Marietta home.
Wilkie believes Dianne Hutcheson shot her son before setting her house on fire and killing herself. The medical examiner may release a toxicology report at a later date, he said.
Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to contact police at (770) 974-3111.
