FAYETTEVILLE — The first-ever meeting between Mount Paran Christian and Our of Lady Mercy was all about executing the big play, and unfortunately the Eagles couldn’t keep up.

Kyle Trammell rushed for 116 yards, including a 79-yard touchdown run, but Mount Paran began the 2012 season with a 38-7 road loss to Our Lady of Mercy on Friday.

“I thought Our Lady of Mercy just executed better than us,” Mount Paran coach Mitch Jordan said. “I just didn’t have the team ready. This is on me and the coaching staff. We just got to do a better job in preparation.”

Other than a field goal and a safety, the Bobcats (1-0) five other scoring plays were from 60, 52, 34, 56 and 42 yards.

“If you make a mistake in the secondary, miss a tackle or let some of their skilled guys get on the

perimeter, they got a chance to hit home runs,” Jordan said. “They got three or four guys who can do that.”

After the Eagles’ opening drive stalled, Rashard Fant returned Ian Berryman’s 32-yard punt 60 yards for the first score of the game. Mount Paran’s first and only response would come with 1:06 left in the first quarter when Trammell slipped through a tackle and continued down the sideline for a 79-yard touchdown for a 7-7 score.

But the Bobcats’ Kalon Anthony would respond less than a minute later with a 52-yard touchdown run, resulting in a 13-7 edge after the missed extra point.

During their first possession of the second quarter, the Bobcats would add to their lead when Chauncey Laboo capped a four-play drive with a 34-yard sprint to the end zone with 7:52 left in the half.

“They just ran the ball effectively tonight and we couldn’t get off the field,” Jordan said. “Then we

didn’t generate any offense as well.”

After Our Lady of Mercy ate up much of the clock in the third quarter and missed a field goal, the Eagles still weren’t able to manufacture much offense and were forced to punt. But the snap went over Berryman’s head and he had no choice but to cover the ball in the end zone for a safety, extending the deficit to 22-7 with 4:09 remaining.

Then after Jarrett Goodly nailed a 41-yard field goal, the Bobcats put the game out of reach when Dylan Terrell connected with Fant on a 56-yard TD completion with 45 seconds to go in the frame.
