Walker and North Cobb Christian can consider themselves rested heading into their meeting tonight at Robertson Field.

The Wolverines (1-0) had a bye after their 30-14 win over Temple to open the season Aug. 24. The Eagles (1-0) did not have to put on their uniforms to earn a victory over Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy, which forfeited when it realized it would not have the necessary equipment to play last Friday.

Walker will go for its first 2-0 start since 2009, and North Cobb Christian will try to match its victory total from 2010 in the first meeting between the two schools.

Wolverines coach John East welcomed the early off week, despite the momentum of starting off his tenure at Walker with a decisive victory.

“We had a good week to just kind of heal up, where we could not do as much contact,” East said. “You do get beat up at the beginning of the season, so I think it’s been good for us.”

Evan Kasian rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown to lead Walker, which ran off 30 points to open the game before Temple added a pair of late touchdowns to make the game appear closer than it was.

“We started well out of the gate, but then we got a little sloppy,” East said.” I think we played well, but there were some other things we didn’t do well and they know that. At every practice, I ask the players whether we won or lost today, and that’s whether we’ve improved. I think we’ve had winning practices.”

The Eagles won their opener last year as well, 42-6 over Mount Zion, before dropping the final nine games of the season.

While North Cobb Christian coach Harry Miles was pleased to start off 1-0, the fact is, it was via forfeit and thus his young team missed out on game experience tempered his enthusiasm.

“I’d rather have a loss on the field than a win (like that),” Miles said. “For one, our seniors get one less game to play. We needed to be more battle-tested going into Walker because they’ve got a pretty good program. Unfortunately, we need to work out all our kinks with them.”

North Cobb Christian is playing a non-region schedule this year as it continues to build its program. East would not discount the significance of the early-season contest as the Wolverines go after their first winning record since 2006.

“Every game is critical,” East said. “It’s (about) executing early on, doing things right for four quarters.”
