SMYRNA - Hutson Mason connected on 30 of 41 passes for 449 yards and four touchdowns as Lassiter ran away from Campbell to post a 42-10 win Friday in Region 6AAAAA action on Friday at McDaniel Stadium.

Nine different receivers caught Mason's passes, as the Trojans scored 40 or more points for the first time this season and improved to 4-0 for the first time in the 28-year history of the program.

Even more important, Lassiter remained undefeated in region play at 3-0.

"Going to 4-0 for the first time is a great accomplishment," Lassiter coach Chip Lindsey said. "It's a good feather in our cap and just goes to show that the program is headed in the right direction. This was a good win."

As impressive as the Trojans' offense was, it was the team's defense that really stole the show. Lassiter bottled up the Campbell offense, holding the Spartans (1-3, 0-3) to 108 yards of offense and two first downs in the second half. The Trojans' defense swarmed the ball on every snap and got into the backfield on several occasions to disrupt Campbell's game plans.

Lassiter led, 42-3, late in the third quarter, and Campbell scored its only touchdown on a Tay Wright 75-yard kickoff return with 3:33 remaining in the third.

"Those guys really played hard on defense," Lindsey said. "All of the credit really needs to go to them. We put a plan together during the offseason that included weight training and speed drills to make our guys faster and quicker. My hats off to the defense because they were everywhere (Friday)."

Lassiter nearly scored on its first possession as Alex Hanks missed a 37-yard field goal attempt. But the Trojans hit pay dirt on their second drive as Mason drove the ball 93 yards on nine plays. He found five different receivers during the drive, culminating in a 13-yard touchdown pass to Bo Shaw for a 7-0 lead with 3:33 left in the first period.

Campbell responded on its ensuing possession, moving the ball downfield during a 13-play drive as Ross Nicely connected on a 25-yard field goal early in the second quarter.

The turning point of the game occurred in the final 1:16 of the first half and at the start of the third period.

Lassiter took possession with 3:06 left in the second quarter and picked up three consecutive first downs. On third-and-10, Mason found Tyren Jones for an 18-yard strike to give Lassiter first-and-goal at the 2. Trey Graham punched into the end zone for the score and a 14-3 Lassiter lead.

The Trojans recovered a Campbell fumble on the ensuing kickoff to retain possession. Two plays later, Mason found Keith Knight for a 20-yard touchdown with 56.1 seconds remaining until halftime, giving the Trojans a 21-3 lead.

Lassiter snuck in an onside kick to start the second half and recovered the football for another possession. Mason drove the ball 40 yards on six plays and found Griffin Roelle for a 6-yard touchdown.

The Lassiter defense then forced a three-and-out on Campbell, which had to punt. The result was a 10-play, 77-yard drive, capped by a 22-yard touchdown from Mason to Knight, putting Lassiter in front, 35-3, with 3:53 left in the third quarter.

Rip Rowan intercepted Wright about 20 seconds later and returned the ball for a 32-yard touchdown for a 42-3 lead. Wright's kickoff return followed and neither team scored the rest of the way.

"Give credit to Lassiter," Campbell coach T.K. Dodd said. "They did a great job defensively. They took our option away and got the ball out of our quarterback's hands. We were out of sync offensively and couldn't get anything going.

"We'll just have to go back to work, not give up and keep working hard."
