MARIETTA - Heading into Friday night's game against Milton, Lassiter knew it was gearing up for the toughest part of its schedule as Region 6AAAAA's elite teams awaited.
If Hutson Mason's performance against the Eagles was any indication, the Trojans could be looking at plenty of wins in their future.
Mason set what was believed to be a new state record with 545 passing yards, along with six touchdowns, to lead Lassiter to a 56-32 victory at Frank Fillmann Stadium.
The undefeated, and 10th-ranked, Trojans (7-0, 6-0) remained tied atop the region standings with Roswell. The Eagles fell to 4-3 overall and 4-2 in the region.
The previous single-game yardage record of 524 was set by Lamar County's Ron Hinson in 1977. Mason, who completed 32 of his 45 passing attempts, had already set the Class AAAAA single-game mark of 486 yards in the Trojans' 42-10 over Campbell on Sept. 18.
On Friday, he threw completions to nine different receivers.
"I just want to thank the Lord for blessing me with the ability to play football, and for keeping me healthy," Mason said. "I have a terrific corps of receivers and an incredible offensive line. All of the credit goes to those guys. Our receiving corps is deep, and it's strong, and I'm just proud that these guys are my teammates. We've bonded since Day 1, and now we want a region championship."
Mason led Lassiter to a quick two-touchdown lead midway through the first quarter after a 15-yard touchdown pass to Griffin Roelle and a 20-yard strike to Tyrin Jones.
A botched snap on the point-after attempt after Jones' TD was remedied when Roelle threw to Kevin Ankerholz for a 2-point conversion and a 15-0 margin.
Milton came right back three plays later when Wil Perry found Dai Jon Parker for a 58-yard touchdown completion. The Eagles forced the Trojans to punt and used a five-play drive, capped by a 42-yard pass from Perry to Ryan Hume reduce the margin even further. Milton failed the 2-point conversion, leaving the score at 15-13 10 seconds into the start of the second period.
The teams traded touchdowns again with Roelle catching a 2-yard score from Mason and Parker going 68 yards on a pass from Colin McElroy, leaving Lassiter's lead at 22-20.
The Trojans finally put the game away in the final 8 minutes of the second quarter and all of the third, outscoring the Eagles 27-6 during that time. Jones scored on a 4-yard run and Mason found Jimmy Mayer for a 9-yard pass with 23.7 seconds left to stake Lassiter out to a 36-20 lead at halftime.
Perry sandwiched a 1-yard touchdown run in between Charlie Hegedus' two touchdowns catches in the third quarter as the Trojans led, 49-26, with 3:50 left in the period.
By that time, Mason had already thrown for 513 yards, so the record was never really in doubt. He had 381 yards by halftime.
"I didn't know about the record until somebody told me," Mason said. "I knew I was putting up some good numbers, but I didn't know where I stood."
Rip Rowan scored Lassiter's final touchdown of the night on a 1-yard plunge, and the Eagles' Parker, who finished with seven receptions for 199 yards, caught his third touchdown with 5:47 remaining in the game to make the score 56-32.
Hegedus led the Trojans with three receptions for 146 yards. Jones caught eight passes for 84 yards and Roelle had eight for 82 yards.
"It was a real shootout," Lassiter coach Chip Lindsey said. "We had to keep scoring because we knew Milton could score at anytime. Our guys just went out there and made plays for Mason. He has great pocket presence, keeps his eyes downfield on the receivers and gets it done."
