It may have taken five weeks - and a few lopsided victories - but voters are finally taking notice that Lassiter is undefeated, and primed to stay that way for awhile.
The Trojans (5-0) re-entered this week's Associated Press prep football poll, sitting No. 10 in Class AAAAA. It marks the latest point in any season that Lassiter has been ranked in the poll, and the Trojans knocked defending state champion Camden County (2-2) out of the poll in the process.
"That shows how tough of a schedule Camden County is playing this year," Lassiter coach Chip Lindsey said of the Wildcats, whose two losses came against current No. 2 Grayson and Lindsey's former employer, Alabama state power Hoover.
Lassiter fell out of the poll after a season-opening 14-7 victory over Sprayberry. Since then, the Trojans' have won games by an average margin of 36-16.
"It's something the kids can be proud of," Lindsey said before tempering enthusiasm.
"It's good (to be back in the poll), but it doesn't mean a whole lot right now. It's not going to help us get into the playoffs, and there is a lot of football left to be played because the schedule is back-loaded. None of the 4-0 teams (in Region 6AAAAA) have played each other yet."
Lassiter, and all its region rivals, will have a bye this Friday.
After its 48-7 win over South Cobb on Saturday, McEachern (5-0) moved up a spot to No. 7. The Indians, who travel to Marietta this week, switched places with Newnan.
The rest of the Class AAAAA poll includes Lowndes (5-0) at No. 1 for the fifth straight week, followed by Grayson (5-0), North Gwinnett (5-0), Northside-Warner Robins (4-0) and M.L. King (4-0). Stephenson (4-0) is No. 6, while Peachtree Ridge (4-1) comes in at No. 9.
Despite its 5-0 record, Walton remains on the outside looking in.
In Class AAAA, Hillgrove (4-0) was a beneficiary of former No. 1 Tucker (4-1) suffering its first loss of the season. As a result, the Hawks moved up to No. 3, and picked up a first-place vote in the process. After its week off, Hillgrove will return to action Friday by hosting South Paulding.
Griffin (5-0) took over the top spot in Class AAAA, followed by Westside-Macon (5-0). Following third-ranked Hillgrove are Southwest DeKalb (4-1), Marist (4-1), North Clayton (5-0) and Sandy Creek (3-1). Tucker (4-1) fell to No. 8, while Apalachee (4-0) and Lakeside-Evans (4-0) rounded out the top 10.
Also breaking into the poll this week was Whitefield Academy (4-1) in Class A. The Wolfpack, on a four-game winning steak, slid into the No. 10 spot after being among the others receiving votes the previous two weeks.
Whitefield Academy trails many of the usual Class A powers in the poll, including No. 1 Wesleyan (5-0) and No. 2 Savannah Christian (4-0). Lincoln County (4-1), Johnson County (5-0) and Wilkinson County (3-1) round out the top five.
Whitefield Academy will travel to Landmark Christian on Friday.
Gainesville (5-0) held on to the top spot in Class AAA while Calhoun (4-0) continued to sit atop Class AA.
