Rain continued to plague the opening round of the Class AAAAAA baseball playoffs Monday as both McEachern and Walton were forced to move their Game 3 matchups to today.

McEachern will host Tift County this afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. Walton will follow one hour later when they host South Gwinnett at 6 p.m.

The winner of the McEachern-Tift County series will play Newnan in the second round. The Indians would be the host team, the Blue Devils would have to travel. The Walton-South Gwinnett winner will host Norcross.

While the Georgia High School Association is scheduled to begin Round 2 series on Wednesday with doubleheaders, and a deciding third game, if necessary, on Thursday, the winners of today’s Game 3s will not begin their second round series until Thursday. Their potential Game 3s would be played on Friday.

The two-day turnaround may force teams to play as many as four games in four days and could put a strain on those pitching staffs.

“Whoever wins these games could be at a disadvantage heading into the next round,” Walton coach Shane Amos said.

Four local teams — Marietta, Kell, Pope and Mount Paran Christian will begin second-round play on Wednesday.
