“We’ve had a little adversity, but we could have played better,” said Cobleigh, who had returned to the Harrison staff this season to serve as Galbraith’s offensive coordinator. “We played hard and had a tough week, but we’ll try to get them together and do a better job next week.
“I bleed blue and green so if they asked me to do it, I was going to do it,” Cobleigh added about being named interim coach. “I just feel bad for the kids.”
On the game’s third possession, the Hoyas’ Bradley Mell intercepted a pass and returned it to Hillgrove’s 2yard line, setting up as short touchdown run by Jonathan Fisher. Cooper Largent kicked the first of his two extra-points and Harrison (4-4, 3-3) had a 7-0 first-quarter lead.
Hillgrove (5-3, 4-2) answered with an 80-yard scoring drive. Richardre Bagley caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Elijah Ironside, Andrew Gaughn added his first of four extrapoints and the score was tied at 7-all with 5:03 to go in the first period.
Hillgrove’s next possession resulted in a touchdown, and the Hawks never trailed again. A 43-yard pass play Ironside to Omar Black put Hillgrove up 14-7 with 7:48 left in the second quarter.
With 1:07 left before halftime, the Hawks increased their advantage to 21-7 after Ironside hooked up with Bagley on an 85-yard touchdown, the longest pass play in Hillgrove history. “I thought our kids played hard,” Hillgrove coach Phil Ironside said. “It was probably the most physical we’ve been.”
Following a scoreless third quarter, the Hawks’ LeMarkus Bailey came up with an interception and returned it 51 yards for a touchdown, making it a 28-7 game with 10:27 to go in the final period. After the Hoyas gave the ball up on downs, Hillgrove’s Bagley found the end zone again, this time on a 15-yard run. Aaron Aghai converted the point after for a 35-7 lead.
Harrison scored its second touchdown of the night on Andrew Brock’s 1-yard plunge, making the score 35-14. Fifteen seconds later, the Hawks’ Tolando Cleveland concluded the scoring with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
