Mine is a family of immigrants. Unless you are Native American, so is yours.

On my dad’s side, my grandmother and grandfather left Ireland in the 1920s for better economic prospects in America. My mom’s family came here from Hungary to escape crushing poverty.

Our family’s first and then the second generations prospered, which is precisely what my forbearers hoped for when they arrived in New York Harbor.

There, they were greeted by the Statue of Liberty, which made a promise to the diverse immigrants pouring out of ships and onto Ellis Island.

“Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

That “golden door” is today being slammed in the face of the tens of thousands of children arriving on the Texas border because they’re the wrong color and speak the wrong language.

If they were blond, blue-eyed Danes, you wouldn’t be hearing a word from the nativists who are apoplectic this tiny number of small brown refugees from drug and crime ridden countries like El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras are seeking the same safe haven their own ancestors sought when they arrived.

The kids are making a dangerous journey, the lucky ones arriving on the U.S. border where they surrender to authorities in the hopes they’ll be granted asylum under a law President George W. Bush signed in 2008 in America.

But to hear the nativists tell it, these children pose a grave threat. In fact, some would shoot to kill.

“You see an illegal. You point your gun dead at him, right between his eyes, and you say, ‘Get back across the border or you will be shot,’” said Chris Davis of the militia group Operation Secure Our Border in a video posted on YouTube, which has since been taken down.

Davis is a mighty poor excuse for a human being. I hope to hell he’s not speaking for our own D.A. King, who I’m pretty sure would draw the line at drawing down on a frightened little girl from El Salvador looking for her mother.

Naturally, the right wing media and conservative pols have politicized this awful spectacle, dehumanizing and demonizing the refugee kids, calling for a militarized rather than a humanitarian response to the crisis while blaming President Obama for the mess.

But Obama passed a bipartisan immigration reform bill through the Senate that would have addressed problems like the current border crisis and also increased border security.

House Republicans have refused to pass the measure.

Last week, President Obama asked for $3.7 billion to help speed up the due process the refugees are owed under U.S. law. House Republicans said no.

Meantime, TV clown Sean Hannity appeared to be listening to Chris Davis. He posed for a picture leaning on a heavy machine gun mounted on a Texas Ranger speed boat in the Rio Grande.

Presumably Hannity is ready to mow down the next bunch of terrified kids who appear on the Mexican side.

@Cobb Guy: DHS and HHS are underfunded and have been for a long time. They would not be overwhelmed if the GOP would throw political road blocks in the way of additional funding. Yes, this is a crisis. The crisis involves innocent people, many of which are children. When does humanitarian responsibility take the place of hatred for our president and political theater? The vast majority of these people are fleeing due to widespread violence in their own countries. The parents who send their children are desperate. I would do anything to save my kids, wouldn't you?

I wuz gist funnin' with ya, Lib.

Seriously, unlike Mr. Foley, at least you responded directly to my comment with a pretty good argument - putting the numbers crossing in the context of the population of the U.S. Nicely done.

However, I don't think that metric works, at least, now. The "tiny numbers" are overwhelming DHS and HHS. Moreover, there appears to be no end in sight.

Have a look at the chart at the bottom of the page of the link I provided; specifically, see the increase in OTM from 2012 to 2013. It doubled. Then, from 2013 to June 2014, another doubling. Will it double again for FY15?

Where does it end? When the entire population of El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala transfers to the U.S.?

If progressives have an answer, I'd love to hear it.

Also, WHY...did it suddenly begin ramping up in 2012? What was the stimulus? This gets back to my original comment on this.

@cobb Guy: I don't rely on Hollywood for a working vocabulary.

I'm obtuse? Ouch.

Anyone wanna bet me a Benjamin that Lib learned that word, and how to use it, from the movie "The Shawshank Redemption?"

Andy Dufresne: How can you be so obtuse?

Warden Samuel Norton: What? What did you call me?

Andy Dufresne: Obtuse. Is it deliberate?

Y'all have a good weekend!

Oh, I hope that Mario Obledo and Angel Gutierrez weren't speaking for our very own nutball color-fixated, white- guilt ridden liberal Kevin Foley! But I wouldn't be surprised!

In June 1998 Obledo articulated his racialist agenda by stating, “We’re going to take over all the political institutions of California. California is going to be a Hispanic state and anyone who doesn’t like it should leave. If they [whites] don’t like Mexicans, they ought to go back to Europe.” Around that same time period, he told the Los Angeles Times: “It's inevitable that Hispanics or Mexican Americans are going to control the institutions of the state of California in the not-too-distant future. If people don't like that, they can leave.”

In June 1998 Obledo was asked to comment on immigrant-rights activist Jose Angel Gutierrez's observation that “We have an aging white America, they are dying, [and] I love it.” Obledo responded: “He's a good friend of mine. A very smart person.

Foley, The senate approved an amnesty that, if that part ever saw reality, would have increased Border patrol Agents FIVE YEARS from now. Much of the reason for the illegal aliens swarming BP Agents, of which only a small part are "children" and "unaccompanied" is that they heard about the senate amnesty and that King Obama is going to amnesty even more illegals.

You are unable to think, so you glide along with the liberal media.

You should be careful of motioning D.A. King, lest he find time to expose and skin you here - yet again.

I note that you ignore your own Steny Hoyer... hahahahahaahahaha

@Cobb Guy: I know someone of your diverse background is aware that there are some very fair skinned Hispanic people and some very dark skinned Hispanic people. You know that right? Probably not!

Secondly, in comparison to the US population the number of children who are fleeing their countries in order to survive is a "tiny number". Do you work at being obtuse or does it come naturally?
July 17, 2014
"...this TINY NUMBER [emphasis added] of small brown refugees from drug and crime ridden countries..."

Tiny number?

Here is a more accurate picture of what's happening: See ABC News, Jim Avilia, July 17, 2014, "Feds Struggling to Cope with Medical 'Breakdown' at the Border."

First paragraph: "The federal government is so overwhelmed by the current tide of migrants crossing the border it can’t provide basic medical screening to all of the children before transporting them – often by air – to longer-term holding facilities across the country, ABC News has learned."

Note that I'm not citing Fox News.

To have a discussion of any issue, it's always good to start with the truth.

Texas charity has abandoned a plan to help house child migrants after conservative media outlets used misleading images to suggest displaced children would be living there in luxury conditions. In fact, the same charity operates other no-frills facilities and had planned to convert a hotel in a similar style.

Conservative media have promoted multiple conspiracy theories connected to the humanitarian migration crisis, including the accusation that President Obama "planned" the recent surge of child migrants across the border for political reasons, that migrant children are infecting Americans with rare diseases, and that Obama is allowing violent gang members to cross the border.

The charity, BCFS Health and Human Services, received a federal contract to house the children at the current site of the Palm Aire Hotel and Suites in Weslaco, Texas. In an interview with local TV station KRGV, BCFS officials said the facility would undergo a renovation to create a dormitory-style atmosphere at the facility.

The plans for the new facility had called for 600 beds for children between the ages of 12 and 17. BCFS would have taken the children from Border Patrol custody and housed them for an average of 15 days. The group also operates a facility in Harlingen, Texas, and a temporary facility at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

When the argument is not going your way, you can always gain a skosh more traction if you introduce skin color. So predictable.

Remember George Zimmerman? The main stream media labeled him a "white" hispanic. Geez, who knew? How many colors do hispanics come in?

I digress.

Mr. Foley, thinking people know it is about the numbers arriving on the border. Specifically, the SPIKE in the numbers.

"What caused the spike?", your low info fan base asks. Violence and grinding poverty? Fine, let's go with that. Was there a SPIKE in the violence that prompted the SPIKE in the numbers we're now seeing crossing the border?

We'll wait for your response.

In the meantime, you speak of your second home in Montana. Would you be willing to house a family until such time they are settled, working, paying taxes, and contributing to society?
