A Marietta woman died in a car wreck Friday morning when the Powder Springs woman who was giving her a ride crashed into a security gate in Mableton.

Luther W. Scott, 53, of Powder Springs, was driving Sonja J. Hammer, 62, of Marietta, in a blue 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser in the parking lot of a closed business and failed to see a security gate on the southern edge of the parking lot at 6328 Mableton Parkway by Factory Shoals Road in Mableton, said Cobb Police Office Mike Bowman.

Scott struck the security gate at 10:50 a.m. “at a relatively slow rate of speed and at an angle causing it to penetrate the passenger compartment of the vehicle and impaling” Hammer, said Bowman.

Hammer was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kim Wallace, 49, of Marietta, who was seated in the backseat, was not injured, Bowman said.

Cobb Police are investigating the crash, and no charges are expected to be filed.
