Many opinions have recently been expressed concerning the granting by Cobb County’s Development Authority of a request by John Williams’ request for tax abatement on his Riverside development near Cumberland.
Laying aside the obvious immediate benefits to the county, it might be well worth their time for all the naysayers to pause for a moment and consider the tremendous generosity of Williams when it comes to the financial and civic support he has donated to so many of ambitious projects undertaken by various entities within our county.
Mr. Williams, whose name is so often synonymous with “anonymous donor,” has been and continues to be one of the staunchest supporters, both financially and otherwise, of projects such as the Cobb Energy Center, the Strand Theatre, Glover Park, and many others too numerous to mention.
His desire for anonymity is commensurate with his philanthropy, so much so that most people in Cobb County are totally unaware of his generosity.
It seems to me that we should pause and reflect a bit on how much Williams has given to us before we express such hypocritical indignation at granting the abatement which, after all and in the long run, will result in such a meaningful benefit to not only the Cumberland area, but to the County as a whole.
