MARIETTA - The CEO of the Cobb County Convention & Visitors Bureau was fired on Wednesday in the wake of her vocal opposition to a proposal that would fold her organization into the Marietta Coliseum & Exhibit Hall Authority.

CEO Joyce Calandra issued an e-mail Wednesday to her 11-member board, stating that board Chairman Mike Knowles had dismissed her with the full knowledge of the board.

The Authority appointed Knowles to the CVB, and it was Knowles who initially proposed the Authority take over the bureau. While both are tourism-promoting organizations, Calandra objected to the merger, saying there is a worry that the Authority would maintain its focus on the Galleria area, where its buildings are, and not the rest of the county - like the CVB does.

CVB board member Frank Quallen, general manager of Atlanta Marriott Northwest, said Cobb hoteliers are opposed to the Authority taking over the CVB because they don't believe the Authority will properly represent them either.

There is a history of bad blood between the two groups, he said.

The Authority is governed by a seven-member board chaired by Earl Smith, a former Cobb Commissioner chairman.

Calandra wrote in her email: "I must say that in light of recent activities I am not surprised at my dismissal, I have been expecting it. I was somewhat surprised to learn that the full board was in agreement with the fact that the CVB is in need of new leadership. I just want you all to know that I have always tried to do what is right for the CVB and its employees and members. I only hope that the new leadership, whoever it may be, will be guided by the same selfless motives as those in my heart,"

Knowles declined to comment Wednesday, as did board member and County Commissioner Tim Lee.

"Sometimes a simple 'no comment' is most appropriate," Lee said.

Calandra reiterated to the Journal that she expected the termination.

"I would like to have remained at the CVB long enough to witness the rightful funding of the CVB restored or alternate funding secured. I will make that my top priority in the months to come. Maybe I can be more helpful from the outside the bureau," she said.

On Tuesday, the bureau voted to table a vote on the merger proposal for another month.

Both state Rep. Earl Ehrhart (R-Powder Springs), who has praised the CVB for the job it does, and Marietta Mayor Bill Dunaway, an Authority member, have raised concerns about the merger.

I agree Joyce forced out Judy Renfroe, and lets not leave Shirley out of the picture, but it still does not make it right to terminate someone in they manner it was done. Furthermore Joyce and Shirley being the puppets for the Authority Board soon to come to an end 1 gone 1 to go. Let the Hotel-Motel community speak for themselves. They have a vested intrest as Manager, Owners & operators.

We will see how this plays out. Start saving your money Shirley you are next!

Calandra forced Renfroe out and sunk a sinking ship. She has outlived her ability to lead an important arm of Cobb government. She needs to shut up and rest in peace.

The dismissal of Joyce Calandra is very unfortinate. Yet another victim of Earl Smith, Michell Swann, and the Authority Board.

The way she was dismissed extremely unproffesional Chair Mike Knowles and his friend just driving by the Bureau Office and stopping in to terminate her. He has to bring a friend from his bank, his boss, to support him? Where were the other members of the 11 member board HIDDING? Where was the man who appointed him to his chairmain post, Earl Smith? HIDDING?

How unprofessional!!! And these are the very people we want to put our faith in to distribute out 8% hotel/motel tax collection.

Tim Lee you need to get a backbone! You want to be Commission Chair we all know that will not happen if you speak out against what your boss Sam Olens wants and lets not forget his boss Earl Smith. I appreciate how far you have gotten in Cobb County Politics having all of the "RIGHT" friends and following "THEIR" Agenda. Try voting aganist the merger like the hotel/motel community wants you to and you might win your Commission Chair Seat by doing the "RIGHT" thing! Imagin that.

I am sure having the merger vote tabled kills the Authority Board Members. They want total control of the Hotel/Motel tax collection because they do not think anyone is as smart as they are and only they know how to best distribute these hotel collected taxes.

This will be a long hard fought battle for them, they need to get ready for it!

The CVB got very little of the hotel/motel taxes collected in Cobb. The Lions' Share went to the authority to help retire its debt for the Galleria Center as well as the Cobb Energy Centre. Their only mentality is to fill meeting rooms, not participate in bringing qualified meetings with hotel rooms into the county. A very sad state of affairs.

Well I guess when the plan doesn't work you fire the person who gives voice to the opposition. Tacky and unprofessional to say the least. Mr. Lee, who wants to be our next Commish Chair can only say no comment ?! Isn't that like voting "present" Mr. Commissioner ? How about taking a stand. Any one can see that the Galleria can't and won't represent the entire county. Sad that a county our size is taking a step back in time and shuting down the CVB while others build theirs up. And finally to the comment to bring back the previous CEO...if you truly want a lack of leadership than bring her back...but then again the board just proved that they don't want a leader, they want a puppet.

Mr. Smith and the Authority have inserted their "yes" men in Rhoden, Knowles and Lee to keep the good ole boy network alive in Cobb! I am glad I gave up my membership to the CVB when they were inserted to gain control of all of the hotel/motel tax. I guess it does not matter what is best for the tourism industry. Joyce and Judy Renfroe satisfied the needs of ALL of Cobb not just the chosen Galleria market.

Takes more than one to make a feud

So if there was bad blood between the two groups did anyone on the other side get fired

Some times a simple "no comment" is just plan simple.

Bring Back Judy Renfroe!
