MARIETTA - After four quarters of regulation packed with offensive punch and defensive toughness, special teams weren't all that special.

Lassiter missed two extra points in regulation, but Pope fell victim to a missed kick that mattered the most as the Greyhounds couldn't convert after scoring in overtime. Because of the untimely miss, Lassiter survived the upset bid from Pope, taking a 32-31 victory Friday night at Frank Fillmann Stadium.

"The story of the game was the extra points, but this was a game that neither team deserved to lose," Lassiter coach Chip Lindsey said. "We were fortunate. This game tells you a lot about both teams."

Both the weary teams, and the thrilled fans who packed into Lassiter's stadium, thought the game was headed to another extra frame of football. The Trojans (2-0, 1-0 Region 6AAAAA) had taken the one-touchdown lead on a 10-yard scoring pass from Hutson Mason to Jimmy Mayer before Alex Hanks - who had missed a pair of PATs earlier in the game - converted for a 32-25 lead.

Pope (1-1, 0-1) then followed with quarterback Holland Frost hitting Garrett Brown on a perfectly thrown 21-yard fade to the corner to apparently send the game to a second overtime period. However, a high snap messed up kicker Alex Kviklys' rhythm and the game was over as the kick sailed wide left.

"This isn't the team that most people thought we would be," Pope coach Matt Kemper said. "We have a good, talented football team. It is hard to find a lot to complain about."

The ending didn't spoil what was an outstanding game by both teams.

Behind Mason's arm, Lassiter's offense was nearly perfect. The senior fell just 3 yards short of eclipsing the 300-yard mark with a machine-like 25-of-30 passing tally with one interception his only blemish on the night.

His four touchdown passes more than made up for that.

Lassiter appeared to put the game away when Mason hit Bo Shaw on an 8-yard scoring pass with 8:28 left in the game, but the missed extra point kept the Greyhounds within striking distance.

On the other side, Pope was just as good, racking up 355 yards of total offense.

The Greyhounds were at their best when they needed to be, taking over at their own 1-yard line with 3:11 remaining and driving the length of the field to tie the game at 25-all on Kviklys' 27-yard field goal as time expired.

Frost finished with 155 yards passing on a 10-of-13 night. Marcorus Garrett led all rushers with 114 yards on 21 carries as Lassiter was able to limit the big-play running attack of the Greyhounds.
