At about 3:39 a.m., Cpl. L. Montcalm of Acworth Police encountered a truck towing a large enclosed trailer that was lodged on the railroad track crossing the intersection of School and Main streets.
She immediately called police dispatch.
Before CSX Corp., which operates the tracks, could be notified, a train had hit the trailer, dragging it about a quarter of a mile down the tracks.
The people in the truck made it out with no injuries after Montcalm saw the train coming and told them “several times” to get out of the vehicle and wait across the street, according to reports.
The driver, Richard Brown, 29, of Summerfield, Fla., was cited for violating a law that prohibits trailers from crossing the intersection, said Capt. Mark Cheatham, spokesman for the Acworth Police Department.
The intersection of School and Main streets, along with Lemon and Main streets, were closed for several hours as crews worked to remove the trailer, furniture and other personal items strewn along the tracks.
The trailer was severely damaged.
Roads were reopened before 11 a.m.
