AUSTELL — Police have charged a teenager in the shooting death a 47-year-old Austell woman who was reportedly caught in the crossfire of a gunfight Monday night.

Khalil James Kelly, 17, of Austell remains in the Cobb County jail without bond on charges of murder and aggravated assault.

Kelly is accused of shooting and killing Deirdre Smith at a home in the 7000 block of Oakhill Circle in Austell at 8:37 p.m.

According to the warrant, Kelly is accused of getting into a fight with another man at a residence in the area at about 8:30 p.m.

“(Kelly) was involved in a verbal dispute with (the man) and threatened (the man) with a handgun,” the warrant states. “Moments later, (the man) and (Kelly) were involved in a gunfight with each other.”

Kelly allegedly fired his gun in the direction of the other man and Smith was caught in the crossfire while trying to mediate an end to the fight.

“When officers arrived (at the scene), they located the body of (Smith), who was deceased from an apparent gunshot wound,” the Cobb Police release states.

Officer Mike Bowman with Cobb Police said Smith was shot as an innocent bystander. Two children were also hurt in the crossfire, but they have non-life threatening injuries.

Additional information about the shootings or injuries has not been released by police.

Kelly’s mother, who declined to give her name Tuesday afternoon when called, said she could not comment on her son’s involvement in the incident at this time.

No arrests in Monday morning shooting death

The shooting death of Smith was the 10th homicide reported in 2013 to the Cobb County Police Department and happened a little more than 12 hours after another early morning shooting, also in Austell.

Police are also investigating the shooting death of 27-year-old Terrence Washington at Riverside Apartment complex at 311 Twin Hill Road in south Cobb at about 7:30 a.m. Monday. He was found dead from multiple gunshots at his home when police arrived on the scene.

Investigators reportedly have a lead on a suspect, but would not release any information on the suspect or discuss possible motives in the killing.

As of Tuesday afternoon, police had still not made any arrests, according to Bowman.

Anyone with information about either shooting is asked to call (770) 499-3945.

This ain't the Cobb County I grew up in is about all I have to say. Well, plus what the H happened here and how do we go about taking things back to the way they once were? Anybody here remember "Speedy" the security guy and the closest police if you needed them was around the square?
