AUSTELL — An Austell man turned himself in to the Atlanta Police Department on Thursday night following an alleged shootout with a teenager that left one woman dead.

Samuel Blackwell, 33, is charged in the death of Deirdre Smith, a 47-year-old Austell woman, after a shootout at about 8:30 p.m. Monday night in the Oakhill Circle area of Austell.

“The Cobb County Police Department is very relieved that (Blackwell) turned himself in,” said Cobb Police Sgt. Dana Pierce.

Khalil James Kelly, 17, of Austell got into a

verbal fight with Blackwell at the residence, resulting in both men exchanging gunfire that killed Smith and injured two children, Pierce said.

Both Kelly and Blackwell are charged with two felony counts each, for murder and aggravated assault, with no bond.

Kelly, who was arrested earlier this week, remains in the Cobb County jail. Blackwell will be transported to the jail within 48 hours, Pierce said.

The “Homegoing Celebration” for Smith will be Monday at Allen Temple AME Church in Woodstock. The viewing starts at 10 a.m., followed by a service at noon.
