The students are on the Student Committee at the Walker School and donated the snacks they collected to the Cancer Center at WellStar Kennestone Hospital.
Fourth-grade student Amelia Wetherington initiated the snack drive for the cancer center. She was inspired to do so by her mother, a breast cancer survivor.
“When my mom was having her treatments, she was complaining that there were no snacks,” Wetherington said.
She said that by providing snacks, the students hope to make the hospital a more comfortable place for the patients.
After her mother finished treatments, Wetherington began the drive by selling bracelets and using the proceeds to buy snacks at Costco. The snacks bought there went directly into the snack drive before being donated to the cancer center.
The snacks the Student Committee donated are estimated to last the hospital six to eight months. Student Tanya Dadlani said: “We like to do whatever we can to help them.”
“There are so many things everyone can do for our community,” said Francis Wetherington, Amelia’s mother. “I’m really grateful that we could be a part of it.”
