In one episode of the hit series “House of Cards” the protagonist Congressman is frustrated by teachers’ union officials unwilling to sign onto education reforms. In unionized states teachers in charter schools, for instance, are freer to opt out of unions and their partisan liberal-Democrat politics.
But Cobb taxpayers footing the bill for collecting union dues through payroll deduction plans have no opt-out, even though Cobb is largely a county of Republicans and independents.
The National Education Association, known in Cobb County as the Cobb County Association of Educators, has endorsed and funded every Democratic nominee for president since the 1970s and only Democrats for Georgia governor. A web search on “NEA contributions” shows where the cash ends up.
Thanks to recent legislation non-political teachers having second thoughts are free to quit such teacher groups at any time. It’s now time our elected officials also stop subsidizing union partisanship at taxpayer expense.
