HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) _ Thousands of people are expected this weekend to walk along the river in Savannah, Ga., at the annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration, and the Highway Patrol plans to set up checkpoints on the South Carolina side of the river.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports the Highway Patrol will have DUI checkpoints Friday night on state Highway 46 in Jasper County. Saturday night there will be another checkpoint on state Highway 170 near the traffic circle with state Highway 46.

Cpl. Bob Beres says the Savannah celebration is known nationwide and the Highway Patrol expects South Carolinians to head down.

Beres says drivers need to realize that drinking and driving is not tolerated anywhere.
