SMYRNA — Campbell’s Michael Rogers ran for 175 yards and three touchdowns in a 36-6 win over Morrow that was marred by a game-ending fight midway through the fourth quarter.

The fight followed a tackle on the Campbell sideline. The Spartans’ bench cleared, and Morrow’s players began to come across the field. Punches were thrown before coaches and officials were able to regain control.

“Both teams were starting to fight and the coaches and officials decided that it wasn’t worth it to continue for the safety of everyone,” Campbell coach Harris Rainbow said.

In addition, the game came to a stop for nearly 30 minutes in the third period when Morrow’s Abue Luangeomboata suffered what Rainbow said was a potential neck injury while making a tackle near the goal line.

Luangeomboata was assisted by the medical staff on the field and taken to a local hospital for precautionary purposes. It was confirmed through the coaching staffs that he had movement though his extremities and was expected to make a full recovery.

“You never want to see an injury like that to any young man on the field,” Rainbow said. “The doctors said that he should be OK.”

The Spartans (1-0) started the game with a six-play 58-yard drive, which ended with a 34-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-13 off a wide receiver option by Antonio Gee to Malcolm Perdue.

The Spartans scored again on their next drive, on a 55-yard touchdown run up the middle by Rogers to give Campbell a 13-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

Morrow (0-1) scored its lone points of the contest on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Courtney Heard to DeMarkus Loman with 10:20 left in the first half to cut the Spartans’ lead to 13-6.

But Campbell responded with a 39-yard touchdown reception by Marlon Horne on a pass from Ricky James on another fourth-down conversion for a 20-6 lead at the half.

Rogers scored on consecutive possessions to start the second half, putting the game out of reach.

James finished the night with 6-for-7 for 105 passing yards and a touchdown.

“I’m proud of how our offense played and the defense performed well also,” Rainbow said. “I’m thrilled that we won but we have to get better every week because we have to prepare for our region, which is a beast.”
