MARIETTA — Cobb County police are investigating a stabbing from last week they say was a homicide outside of a home on Brackett Drive off of Windy Hill and Austell roads in south Cobb.

Charles Mahaffey, 33, of Marietta, was arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault in the death of Christopher Reynolds.

Police responded to a 911 call and arrived on the scene at 10:12 p.m. on Nov. 25 to find Reynolds lying in the road, dead, said Sgt. Dana Pierce with Cobb Police Department.

Pierce said the two men did know each other but were not friends, nor were they related.

“They had knowledge of each other through the people who lived at that residence (on Brackett Drive),” Pierce said.

Mahaffey was arrested and booked into the county jail the next morning on Nov. 26. He has not been granted a bond and remains in jail.

Pierce would not say what type of knife was used.

“We had a person stabbed in the roadway when police arrived. He was declared deceased on the scene,” he said. “I don’t know what type of knife. I do not know the motive behind it. There was a verbal altercation that eventually led to one of the two being stabbed. Somehow it escalated.”

The case will be sent to the District Attorney’s office, who will decide if the charges stick, or whether some get added or dropped.

Pierce said the potential issue of self defense will be investigated.

“Once these things are investigated, charges could be added or taken away from the case,” he said.
