I’ve said all along that the Board of Commissioners appears to have no idea what the “SP” means in SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax). Meanwhile, Sifen stated many items have been removed from the regular budget and now require the SPLOST revenue to pay for their operation. If that is correct, why haven’t our property taxes that provide the revenue for the general funds been reduced to reflect all the savings from the SPLOST funding of these projects? How does this problem get fixed?
Also, going to a six-year SPLOST is dangerously creating a nearly permanent tax, which goes beyond the term of each commissioner. Long-term planning is sensible, but making the term of the SPLOST last longer than the BoC that created it can possibly create some future significant and costly issues.
The real reality is that the SPLOST is purposely being misconstrued by the BoC and all taxes are steadily increasing and lasting longer at the local, state and federal levels. Advocating the Cobb voters approve the new six year SPLOST is not in everyone’s best interest.
