School Board chair right to stand up to superintendent

DEAR EDITOR:

Cobb County finally has a school board chairman who knows what his job is and does it. Chairman Randy Scamihorn is doing an excellent job of letting Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa and the Glover Street gang know that they work for the School Board and the voters of Cobb County. It is not the other way around, even though we have had several boards with gutless chairpersons who thought differently.

I know that the people in Post Six worked very hard to get board member Scott Sweeney elected back in 2010, based on solemn promises that he was a reformer and would get the School District back on track. They were sick and tired of the Rev. Dr. John Crooks, who was the superintendent’s lap dog and lackey. The fact of the matter is that Sweeney, like Crooks before him, could not wait to roll over and play dead for then-Superintendent Fred Sanderson and the Chamber of Commerce bunch.

According to MDJ’s “Around Town” on June 29, Dr. Hinojosa said that Scott Sweeney was the best chairman he ever worked with. Sweeney should remember those words. They are the epitaph on the tombstone of his political career.

If that is not enough to bury him, his (alleged) crybaby threats to call the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools dogs on Randy Scamihorn will be. Is he really that selfish that he would try to throw the school district “under the bus” just to get his way?

The folks at SACS may think that Hinojosa is supposed to run the show, but that is in direct conflict with state law.

So, tell me, what is Scott going to report? Maybe the message will go something like this. “You better come here quick and investigate this guy Scamihorn. He is doing what he is supposed to and Hinojosa and I don’t like it.”

If he makes good on that threat, I can personally guarantee him more trouble than he can handle. There is a whole bunch of Cobb County attorneys, along with State School Superintendent John Barge and Attorney General Sam Olens, all ready willing and able to straighten out his thinking along with that of Hinojosa and, if necessary, that of the folks at SACS too.

The law is written so that the school board runs the show. The superintendent works for the school board. The board serves at the pleasure of the voters.

The best thing Sweeney can do is lay low and try to stay out of the limelight until it is time for him to make an unsuccessful run for re-election. He is definitely going to find out that the voters in Post 6 do not like to be deceived and double-crossed.

Why publish such rubbish ? Serious issues need serious leadership and solutions.

---and exactly how are the kids being forgotten here?

-- or the teachers?

What a dramatic overstatement.

Yep! Stir the politics and forget the kids. We continue to argue about who should be running the show while ignoring the students and teachers. Some

very disgusting discourses going on here.

Devlin-

Mr Scamihorn with his experience in the Cobb school district is an excellent chairman.

I could not have said it better. Amen!!! Don't forget one of Mr. Sweeney's major campaign promises...eliminating the vacation accrual perk. He also favored replacing Brock-Clay as counsel. I campaigned for Mr. Sweeney and have been very disappointed that the only campaign promise he has kept is keeping a traditional school calendar.
love this and amen

You hit the nail right on the head... too bad that Sweeney voted to not censure Banks for years of unethical behavior, yet now wants to get SACS involved for a chairman who actually has a backbone. HAHAH Sweeney is a weenie when it comes to doing what is right. Great commentary and great facts...

You seriously underestimate the support and appreciation Post 6 has for Sweeney's leadership.

Devlin - you opposed SPLOST IV.

Post 6, Sweeney's post, supported SPLOST IV by nearly 70%.

Are you living under? Sweeney is nothing more than a politican wanna be. He will NEVER get re-elected. Too much of a grass roots effort underway to get him outta there. He may have pushed SPLOST to get the dollars for Walton High school but people are tired of just electing people to spend money.
