ATLANTA — On a day where more than half the field shot in the red, Ollie Schniederjans carded nine birdies on his way to a nine-under 63 on Wednesday — only to stand second following one golfer’s even better first round of the Dogwood Invitational.

The Georgia Tech standout and former Harrison High School product was left looking up to Ben Griffin, the nation’s 11th-ranked junior golfer. Griffin, a rising high school senior from Chapel Hill, N.C., birdied seven holes, eagled the par-5 ninth — his last hole of the day — and shot 61.

In all, 49 of the 90 entrants at Druid Hills Golf Club shot under par — three with Cobb County ties. Schniederjans’ former Harrison teammate, South Alabama golfer Michael Garretson, shot 68, while Kell product Michael Hines, a current teammate of Schniederjans’ at Georgia Tech, shot 70. Kennesaw State’s Jimmy Beck shot 71.

Mableton resident Brian Katrek shot 78.

Rounding out the top five were Georgia State’s Davin White and Auburn’s Michael Johnson at 64, and a three-way tie at 65 between Alabama’s Tom Lovelady, Oglethorpe’s Anthony Maccaglia and UAB’s Thomas Sutton.
