The First Annual Pinetree Country Club Fun Run on Feb. 25 exceeded expectations. More than $4,000 was donated to SafePath Children’s Advocacy Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the trauma of child abuse by offering a comprehensive, professional and child-friendly approach to allegations of child abuse.

Charlie Barton was the first participant to cross the finish line. Charlie is the son of Bret Barton, Pine Tree Country Club’s superintendent. Riley Shamblin was the first female to cross the finish line. Riley is the granddaughter of Myron and Joy Cantrell. Jeff Epstein for being the first adult to finish.

Lots of memories were tossed about at a birthday luncheon for Jean Somerlot on Feb. 23, hosted by Barbara and J.W. Taylor at their Powder Springs home. Attending were Pellie and Dr. James Manning, Connie and Dr. Eugene Harley and Somerlot’s daughter, Karen Raymer of Marietta.

A lovely birthday cake, prepared by Taylor’s daughter, Melanie Sundquist, was in the form of a piano. The menu, prepared by Taylor, included recipes given to her by the late Lilian Sullivan, who was Manning, Harley and Taylor’s voice teacher, accompanied by Somerlot. After Sullivan died, the group continued singing together, accompanied by Somerlot. They have been singing together since the 1960s, bound together by their love of music.

Congratulations to Allen Briggs who was awarded the Special Citizen of the Year for 2012 by Right in the Community. Allen has worked at Burger King for seven years and has been an exemplary worker. He lives on his own and is a great role model for others with developmental disabilities.
