Cole has taught design studio courses at the university since 1987, as well as the architecture core course professional practice and ethics.
"After a meeting with the chairs and faculty of the departments of Architecture and Construction Management, the overwhelming consensus was that Dean Cole had done an outstanding job in the interim role," said Zvi Szafran, the university's academics affairs vice president. "His commitment to communication and openness about his plans for the future of the school were ambitious and inclusive of both departments."
Szafran said that vision for the future direction of both departments was one of the driving forces behind the decision to make his interim position permanent. The majority of faculty believed Cole should have more time to carry out his vision.
Cole is a licensed architect with a master's degree in architecture from Georgia Tech. He holds a certificate from the National Council of Architectural Boards and is a member of the American Institute of Architects.
He has maintained an architectural consulting practice in the area of commercial design since 1989 and served as vice president and project manager at Simpson and Associates, Architects and Planners from 1978 to 1989 before practicing as C. Richard Cole, Architect, and later, Cole Architects.
The university's Student Government Association chose him as the Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year in 1989-90, and again for the 2012-13 year.
The SPSU faculty awarded him the Outstanding Faculty Award in 1989, and he served as moderator of the Faculty Senate during the 1989-90 academic year. In 2011-12, he chaired the Architecture Department's academic council, which developed a departmental strategic plan.
