Most public comment regarding the tax abatement recently gifted by the unelected and unaccountable Development Authority of Cobb County to the politically well-connected private developer of the Riverwalk private office/condominium project has been righteously indignant. It appears this private project comes nowhere close to meeting the job-creating standards supposedly guiding the Development Authority supposedly established to benefit the taxpayers, not the well-connected.

It is too easy for such appointed bureaucrats to be magnanimous in handing out money when it is someone else’s money they dispense, in this case public tax dollars. No Authority such as this should ever be empowered to operate without public accountability.

In the December 8 Marietta Daily Journal, Scott Chadwick’s letter-to-the-editor heaps sycophantic praise on Riverwalk developer John Williams as such a wonderful benefactor to Cobb County that taxpayers should apparently be honored to favor him with a very large tax exemption. Most taxpayers will disagree.

Mr. Williams should be content with whatever “citizen of the year” honors and other civic accolades he has received.

Let’s call the Riverwalk scandal what it is: milking the system for the benefit of well-to-do insiders at the expense of the taxpayers.
